If I'm merely updating my ebook's description, do I need to continue through all the remaining steps and publish again? It's not a problem to do so, but I don't want to do it if this is the wrong thing to do :). Sorry if it's a common question.

Yes, you do, but you don't need to upload your file again or anything. If you don't click "publish," then the changes aren't published.

You can update the Description in Author Central instead and then you don't need to republish. I understand that after working on the Description in Author Central you can't ever update it in the Bookshelf, you have to do it in Author Central. I haven't found that to be a problem and I find it quicker and easier to do in Author Central.

I notice this is your first post so if you haven't set up an Author Central page yet, here's the link: https://authorcentral.amazon.com/

corrected a couple of stupid typos. I wish my fingers would do what they're supposed to do.

Yes, but if you later make a change to file, cover, price or keywords, then the original descr*iption in the metadata will replace what you entered via Author Central.

To clarify from above replies:
YES you do need to click on 'Publish' anytime you make a change to anything.
You can ALSO make the change at Author Central which makes the change on screen show faster. HOWEVER, if you later make any changes to something with the book it will revert to the original description SO, DO also make the change on your bookshelf (to your book there).
To make a change to your description ONLY thru your bookshelf (not also using Author Central), it can take up to a week, sometimes longer to show the change.

I've not found this to be true.

What experience have others had?

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

To repeat what the others have said: Yes. It looks needless but just view it as sort of a legal, last step safety feature. Any changes you make to your book, whether content or description, you have to 'republish'. It's kind of like Windows asking you "do you really want to delete these files?" That kind of thing.

Your changes in description will go through the standard 'approval' process, and such changes will appear within a couple days.

In the meantime, the old description will remain until the new one is approved, then it changes to the new one.

Have no idea of the Author Central description process. I don't mess with that. Any changes I make in descriptions, etc. I do through the bookshelf.

It happened to me a couple of years ago, which is why I never bother with Aut*hor Cen*tral now for editing the des*cription.

Thank you, everyone. Question answered. Interesting, it helped shed some light on the difference and interplay of Author Central vs. Bookshelf descriptions. And I appreciate the caveats about 'Dont trust KDP to publish your print book' lol. I will try not to get my hopes up too high!
