Hi,

I recently finished writing my first book and I was wondering if you have some good tips for promoting my book? I have been looking at a few publicity sites that help with marketing books, but I haven't made a final decision, do you have any advice you could give me? Searching on Google gave me http://onlinebookpublicity.com/ so right now I am considering that.

Have a nice day,
Carole

Looks like a great service. For the owners of the service. $500 a year to promote your book on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram? Sounds like a hell of a deal. Again, for the service. Unless you've written the next 50 Shades or something that successful, you will be throwing money down the toilet.

My advice, stay away from that or any other service like it. You'll be spending $500 to make $25. Not that great a deal.

I've asked a few authors and most of them responded that they use that service and were happy with the results. But I understand what you are saying.

Here's a useful blog post on promoting your book: https://insights.bookbub.com/marketing-a-new-book-tactics-authors-publishers-love

And one on getting the most out of your Amazon store listing: https://www.writtenwordmedia.com/2017/03/07/sell-more-books-on-amazon/

And a somewhat biased look at the whole process of self-publishing (you can ignore the BookBaby promotions): https://www.bookbaby.com/pages/pdf/5-Steps-To-Self-Publishing.pdf

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

Check those author's book ranks.

You have no idea if the authors you contacted have anything to do with running the service or if they are afraid to tell the truth. Or they might simply be ignorant in thinking that they have gotten a good ROI when in fact, they haven't.

$500 is a lot of money to shell out for social media. I bet the ROI is horrible.

Never, never, never pay anyone to tweet about your books or to post on Facebook, if that's all they do. I can guarantee you'll be disappointed.

Stick to established companies that will advertise your books to their genre-specific e-mail lists: Bookbub, ENT, Free Kindle Books & Tips, Fussy Librarian, and a few others.
