Yup, it has finally happened. I will share in a very small percentage of the KDP Select fund. Getting excited for me US $1.something or rather which should convert to something more in AUD.

Since I now have money coming my way, does that make me a fully fledged author? Just curious? Silly question I know, but I'm excited!

I felt like an author the second I hit publish and had a real ebook for sale. I felt like a super real author when I got a physical proof copy of my book to peruse. Earning money for my book just makes me a selling author.

Grats on getting some money btw :)

Isn't it strange - I never actually used the word 'author' until I'd published at least six or seven books! I would say 'I write', and then elaborate to say 'I write books', only if pressed.

Even now, calling myself an 'author' sounds strange, even though I do actually now believe I have a right to use the word.

OP... Huge congrats! The first $1 is the hardest! ;) It's all easy street from here out! LOL

Seriously though...enjoy the moment!

J :)

You were an author the minute you wrote your first work. What you are now is a "professional author."

Congrats. :)

I have the same feeling. Recently, I had to put occupation on a form for the first time since quitting my other job, and I went with writer. The doctor asked what I did for a living, looked at the form, and gave me a look which I interpreted as doubt that I actually make living. I think I’ll go with author next time.

Author is definitely easier for people to understand.

I don't know why, but some people seem to interpret 'writer' as 'doodler'!

In my 'day' job, I've explained to my boss numerous times that I write (500+ page) books. He has at various times referred to them as my 'poetry', my 'hobby', my 'scribbling', and my books as my 'naughty stories (nudge-nudge, wink-wink!)'.

I have, at various times, referred to him as an .... Maybe I'd better keep those names to myself! ;)

Writer was before publishing. Actually I think I referred to myself as 'getting into writing'.
Author was for after publishing.
I hope to be 'money making author' after six or seven books!

Congrats... it is a pretty surreal experience the first time you physically hold a book you have "authored" - I spent a lot of time writing over the years as a hobby while pursuing a career, paying the bills, raising the kids, etc etc... but with my third novel just published I'm coming to terms with- hey maybe its okay to call myself an author now as well... pretty cool - its what I always wanted to do...

Paul, I think you now understand why, back in the day, some small shops used to display a framed "First Dollar" on their walls..don't you? Enjoy the success. As to, author versus writer???
For some reason 'writer' sounds youthful, dynamic and cerebral but humble, to my ears., at least. As opposed to old scholar type; you know, non-smiling, moody and standoffish.

OK, here is my two cents - you are writing when you put pen to paper, fingers to the keys, or in todays world, flip the switch and talk to the mike. You are the author of the work thus produced.
I used Writer on forms, Author sounds a bit pretentious and as an occupation I can be at work writing, but at work authoring? When introduced I have notice people will say both "a writer of fiction" and "The author of several books" . I have come to the conclusion writing is how I spend my day, I am the author of my day's efforts. You need not be paid to be considered an author - it is terrific acknowledgement, delightfully satisfying when one is paid.
Welcome to the world of writer - publisher - marketer- authors for now you are all these things. B
