Product Display Ads not being given impressions

Has anyone else experienced your Product Display Ads being given ZERO impressions by Amazon Marketing Services even though the price per click is quite high compared to the average?

The average cost per click they show when I set the ads up was $0.25. When I check it now it shows $0.15-$0.20 per click. I have a Superhero fantasy book and I am using a number of interest categories to promote it. My book is not a huge seller, but has sold (since April publication date) around 800 Kindle eBooks/paperback and over 700,000 KU pages read.

I set up the ads (2 of them) and started at over $0.50 per click and for a time set it up to $0.86 per click (did higher amount to see if price was the problem) and I still get ZERO impressions. This started happening about a month ago (prior to the impressions being cut off I had over 21k impressions on the same two ads).

It is pretty clear Amazon Marketing Services has cut off exposure of my ads, which is wrong when they are tying up $100 per ad and not just billing as you go. I sent them a customer service request on the problem and they gave me a boiler plate response.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm been seeing this as well. There are a couple of issues involved, I think.

First, about Sep. 12, AMS gave out a bunch of click credits as compensation for the ad dashboard reporting incorrect values in some columns. The amounts varied, depending on your history with AMS, but I think the minimum was $25. This, I think, has inflated bids because everyone is eager to use the free money to reap real money.

Second, AMS is about to upgrade their system, and I'm wondering if, as a side-effect, some display ad campaigns weren't nicked in the process. We should see after Oct. 10.

Sometimes it helps to just Copy a campaign and start a duplicate running. See if, after a week, the duplicate is getting impressions. If it is, terminate the one that isn't working any longer. As long as you're not getting clicks, you're not getting charged, so it's worth it to try different things.

Thank you for your response. I'll just have to be patient and see if it works itself out.

As to copy and cancel, the Product Display Ads have a $100 minimum. Can I cancel them with only part of that amount used up and only be charged for what's been used? Or, will they charge me the minimum $100?

Yeah, that's just really bad wording. You do not commit to spending $100. What the "budget" value is, is an emergency stop point, should you start getting a click-storm. If, after spending $3.74 on clicks, you decide a campaign isn't worth it any longer, you can just terminate it and be out only the $3.74 (subject to any straggler clicks that may show up after the termination of the campaign).

Another factor could be related to which box you checked when you set up the ad.
If you clicked 'start ad right away' (which is a reasonable choice!) you pointedly did NOT choose to spread impressions out over the length of the campaign.
So if you follow Joseph's advice to start another campaign, start two--one to start right away and one to spread out over time.

Hmmm. Did the "start right away" replace the option to push as many impressions as possible? In past experience, the "spread" option seemed to get me more impressions than the rush option.

I'd be interested to hear what current effects are.

A few months ago, I tried the "tortoise" options for a couple of campaigns just to see what they'd do. I got bored looking at the reports and seeing hardly any change from day to day, so I went back to using the "hare" option for all my new campaigns.

Thanks. I might try those again soon. (AFTER Oct. 10.)

Thanks all for your replies. Good to know the $100 minimum is not a hard minimum if I end the ad early.

At this point the ads were not very productive, so I am going to cancel them and start up again once I have the sequel ready to go and I'm ready for a new release blitz.

I can only guess but it appears that Amazon uses an algorithm to decide what ads to display based on various factors that only they have programmed. it's very hard to compete against authors with many books out as they are profitable on higher paid clicks when a one book wonder gets killed.

It also seems that when someone opens a new account they get a temporary special treatment of extra impressions to keep them excited, and slowly those dwindle down over time. Eventually it ends up to be dog eat dog out there.

Anyway i appreciate the opportunity to advertise on Amazon even if I lose money on one book. I wish they had the service on the international sites and i would expect the costs to be much lower than the U.S. store. That is perhaps why they haven't brought this out yet, even though they obviously have the technical ability to do it.

One thing no one has mentioned yet is that Amazon also sells their ad space to any large publisher that wants it now. Anything left over is what we independent publishers / authors get to bid on. According to the couple of friends I have working at Amazon, the company has sold close to ninety five percent of it's ad space in November and December to large publishing houses, leaving almost nothing for the rest of us.

Right now my product display ads are targeting all of science fiction and parts of mystery / thriller. My bids are at fifty cents and I am only getting about one hundred impressions per day. A month ago I was getting a couple thousand per day with thirty cent bids.

As far my author friends and as I am concerned, Amazon has abandoned us for the big publishers. We helped build them up and once they started attracting big advertisers they gave us indies the middle finger. In the past year, fifty seven authors I know who were making a living using Amazon exclusively have given up writing and gone back to regular jobs. Most of us are not interested in spending our time managing multiple ads with multiple companies just to sell a handful of books. Amazon was great years ago when they took all the work out of publishing, but the future is not looking good for us now.

@ Eric

Thanks for the info. And for depressing my day. :(

Note: Some of this I had suspected, but I didn't think the sell-out was at the 95% level.

It's pretty depressing alright. One of my friends who worked at Amazon as a programmer quit because of this. He believes the company has "gone down a path of pure evil" and didn't want anything to do with them anymore. Their loss though, the guy has a brain the size of a planet and is one of the best programmers I have ever known.

I've worked many years in DP/IT, and in my past there have been a couple of times when I've lost a job after jumping to the top of a conference table and yelling "bullsh*t!" (Figuratively.) :)

Though those incidents had more to do with management incompetence than misfeasance or malfeasance.
