Hi,

I am Matías Torreguitar and I have published the Field Guide to Birds of Patagonia and the South Atlantic. For some reason that I don't know my book started appearing randomly in the list of Amazon.com for a few days and suddenly my book just wasn't there anymore. This happened in the first 10 days of November.

I requested help and Amazon support gave me evasive answers for a while stating that they would explain the problem to me at a later stage. Suddenly about 10 days later the book appeared listed again and despite several complaints I received no explanation whatsoever from Amazon.com

The above could have been taken as a general problem however, it is not just that with the complete picture. The point is that month after month my book was selling better (published in June) and for the month of November I had planned an advertising campaign that included:

Classified Advert in Bird Watching UK November issue (reaching several thousand subscribers)

1/4 page advertisement in Bird Watching November supplement “World Birding” (reaching several thousand subscribers)

November Bird Watching UK Mailing (reaching 20.000 people)

Adwords campaigns in Google - Friday, Saturday and Sunday for all November weekends

All 4 above mentioned campaigns were paid for and I was not in a position to stop them by the time my Field Guide to Birds of Patagonia and the South Atlantic went “missing” from Amazon.com.

Besides the mentioned campaigns, I advertise daily my book in my Facebook site (Extreme South Birding) and in my website (www.extremesouthbirding.com).

Of course I expected with this aggressive campaign to obtain more sells in November but, for obvious reasons this is not the case. In all these advertisements I prompted readers to purchase the book in Amazon.com but the book was not there to be purchased so in fact I believe that instead of a good campaign it may have been a very negative advertisement campaign.

The bottomline is that after explaining all this to Amazon's support various times I received no answer as to the reasons why my book went "missing" and not even an "we are sorry for all the money you spent, there is nothing we can do about it".

Is all this a normal procedure? so far I have had positive responses from the support team but with this I was utterly disappointed. Has someone had a similar experience?

Thank you,
Matías Torreguitar

The problem may have been due to various upgrades that they were doing to the computer system.
Some parts of the entire system seem to have been acting odd for a while.

I've read in various posts of search engine problems and books not on the Bookshelf, but not missing sales pages, though I've not experienced it personally. Your book is certainly listed now, found with just a couple of keywords. If your advertisement did not bring in the number of orders expected, you find yourself with every other indie writer who ever placed an ad. You blame Amazon, but there could be other issues:
  • Your book, being fixed format, is not available on a large number of e-readers; on compatible machines, especially those with smaller screens, reading a fixed format book can be difficult to almost impossible.
  • Also as a consequence of fixed format, your Look Inside shows only half of any page, possibly making a poor impression on potential customers.
  • Your file is so large, navigating the Look Inside is agonizingly slow, and some customers might be put off by the warning label from Amazon of slow downloads.
I think you're helped, though, by the fact that at least some of your advertising venues seem to be print. Hobbyists will often look at magazines and newsletters for months before putting them aside, so dividends from your investment might yet appear. Good luck with your book. It looks really well done.

As to support, I have never had a problem that wasn't taken care of in a day or two, but they do seem stretched rather thin these days, what with a flurry of changes, upgrades, new programs and glitches. Just make sure you reply to e-mails you receive and don't start a new ticket...you want them to keep moving forward on your complaint, not start over.

Yes, several days ago numerous ebooks and other formats seem to have gone missing on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, maybe elsewhere. I once saw one of my books vanish as I was looking at the Amazon page (it was a link to the paperback edition), and another time I saw the audiobook of another author disappear.

It seems to have been fixed now.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

Good luck! -- NJ

Hi, thanks for your answer.

I think you misunderstood somehow my complaint. It is not that I am blaming Amazon for the orders I expected, in fact I blame Amazon for nothing. What I say is that considering that I have spent a few hundred dollars in advertising for the moment my book went missing the least I expected was a "we are sorry for this" or something of this kind however, I received no explanation on the subject and no apologies for the money I have spent in vain.

Matías

Unfortunately, Amazon rarely gives a logical explanation for anything, hardly ever admits they were in the wrong, and never says sorry. Not unlike most of my other relationships. "sigh"
