Making an Audio Book

I want to make an audio book, not from reading a book I have already got published on Amazon but to prepare a topic which is one of general conversation about a subject of interest. So it’s listening in on an educated conversation and never intended to be in written form.
I already know about MP3 nd have used this system before, I’ve been reading about ACX and Garage Band, thinking that I don’t need to edit to this extent and am now wondering if I can simply do MP3 and I’m on my way. I don’t have a MAC computer and have access to Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.
I’d be grateful for any advice.

Your biggest challenge is going to be marketing. Anyone can record something they say, but making it available to others is the hard part.

ACX publishes and sells audio downloads, but they are very fussy about quality. If you do not have experience with recorded speech and do not have professional recording equipment, you would need to hire someone who did.

Thanks for your reply. The stuff I will be recording will be conversations, which draw the listener into the virtual conversation and leaves them thinking about the topic and feeling fairly involved, yet still only a listener. I am a professional speaker but this won't have any bearing on the conversation, as there will be at least four voices interacting throughout the audio book. Can audio conversations then be uploaded as audio books? While I did do seventy five audio recordings via MP3 for a client, I haven't done any for myself and am wondering how effective the quality is for uploading as audio books. Thank-you for any more advice you may be able to provide me with.

You wouldn't be able to make an audio book out of a simple Mp3 recording. Or at least you wouldn't be able to through ACX, which is probably the major place for indies and individuals to produce audio books. (Go to their website, acx dot com, to learn more). They are extremely picky about sound quality, which is why you really need a professional studio and sound equipment. Do you have access to something like that? But their audio productions do sell!

I did one (very short) audiobook, and it does sell a few copies, but I was astonished at how difficult it was to "proofread" the audio. I haven't been tempted back into the pit. The royalties are rather slender compared to print or digital.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ
