Unpublished paperback still showing

Hello all, I hope your day is going well

I cannot believe how many silly mistakes I have made during my foray into self-publishing over the last two weeks. I am beginning to feel like Frank Spencer of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em fame! My worst mistake was that I published my paperback without the subtitle (although I could have sworn I added it) so that it would not match the e-book and sit happily ever after together on the same page.

To get to the point I deleted my erroneous paperback to go back to square one, but it is still showing up on Amazon as 'currently unavailable.' when I had hoped for extinction. Admittedly I only pressed the delete button half an hour ago. Will my wrongly-titled paperback remain on Amazon's hallowed shelves to haunt me, or will it disappear over the next day or two?

I am now going out to drown my self-publishing sorrows with Americano and cake.

Thanks for reading this
Mrs Julia Evans

I noticed this yesterday, posted by Dave Casey;

And now... it appears that now you CAN delete your paperbacks. I was looking through the paperback menu this evening and noticed a new addition to the menu; Delete Paperback. And it works. I deleted a test case paperback that I had no intention of ever publishing on KDP. Will wonders never cease?
As an added bonus, I checked the menu for an ebook that I sold a grand total of ONE copy of and unpublished a few months ago and saw Delete Ebook in the menu. Viola! It no longer clutters my bookshelf.

Have a look at the grey button to the right of your book. The 'delete' entry is a new option for both paperbacks and e-books.

Presumably with the e-books, Amazon simply maintain a version that can be re-downloaded by anyone who has already made a purchase, but it no longer stares you in the face every time you open the bookshelf.

Hope that helps. J

Your paperback will remain on Amazon as long as there is someone who could list it, and there always is.

You didn't need to delete your book and start over in order for the paperback and the ebook to appear together. Asking KDP nicely (via Contact link at lower right) would have done the trick.

Thanks for the replies.

Julia, I did find the grey delete button and pressed it with glee, but the dratted book is still showing up. I will give it a bit longer and hope it disappears.

'Salamander', oh no, what have I gone and done?

'cdalebrittain', I had not realised - I thought that unless the title and subtitle matched precisely, they woudn't pair them up, but I should have asked first.

I am scared to republish it in case I end up in a nightmare Groundhog Day style paperback publishing nightmare!

Janet,

Trust me, we ALL start from having zero knowledge and have to learn!

And yes, most of us make mistakes along the way. Some of us are just luckier than others when it comes to being able to keep quiet about them.

(And of course, some of us are lucky enough to be married to men who (after decades of training), always pretend to look the other way, every time we do something incredibly stupid!)

Just keep at it. You'll get there!

J :)

Apparently, you're referring to KDP print versions and not Createspace versions. I have half a dozen images of Createspace shame and embarrassment that continue to show up at A-zon, even though they're retired. Customer Service refuses to completely remove them from their sales channels, even though they've been 'currently unavailable for purchase' for years.

Take them out of all distribution areas except one.

Paperbacks are forever. You could of course just accept the error. Almost certainly Support will link them together if you use the form provided. Contact Us option (bottom of this page, right side).

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

Paperbacks are forever.

That's what I've always assumed.

I just spent a half hour at Createspace taking everything out of all sales channels. I noticed I'd already done that with a couple of them, but they've always shown up in simple searches at A-zon. We'll see what happens in 3-5 days, if anything disappears.
The two biggest mistakes I've made in publishing was to use my real name originally, and to make print books. They just don't sell well enough for not being able to change metadata. But I always used CS's free ISBN. Maybe if I would've used my own, I'd be able to change the metadata. Oh well, just a little more crap in that big dumptruck of shame that I drive everywhere I go.

Hello, 'Brad the Wronger', I'm glad I'm not the only one. I have now got the updated version at the starting-block but am terrified to press the publish button. I could have nightmares about multiples of my erroneous paperbacks showing up on Amazon, never to be deleted. I am only publishing paperbacks as a few kindle-phobics talked me into it - and may possibly (probably) never buy it.
Have a great weekend, all,

Hello, 'Notjohn' - next time I will just accept the error, and ask CS to marry them as you suggest. However, I read some help guide about the, having to have the same subtitle and took it at face value. I was the only person who bought the first one as a proof copy, and it is winging its merry way to me.
I will certainly think twice about bothering with a paperback in future. Thank Goodness I did not splash out the hundred quid or so on an ISBN.
Thanks for your help,
J x

Assuming the version-without-the-subtitle is still lingering on your Bookshelf, you should be able to make it live again. Then, as noted, ask KDP to manually link the print and ebook versions. If you do this, just never publish your "second" version.

You do have to have title and subtitle exactly the same for the books to link automatically, but humans can figure out, if it's pointed out to them, that two versions of the same book are indeed the same book.
