After conducting a one day promo where I gave away 1600 books, I have noticed a post-promo sales swell. I was wondering from anyone's experiences how long this 'swell' goes on for or is there a time limit. I have read elsewhere on these forums that a book that has been uploaded lots of times will also come up more frequently on results 'customers who have bought this book also bought/also viewed this book.' I am asuming this is the reason for my post promo sales (increased search results on Amazon). Has anyone here found this swell goes on indefinititely, or does it die off after a while.

Thanks for your responses.

I ran a promo last Mon-Weds and had 8000 downloads. I had great follow on sales but they've tailed off yesterday/today to about 10% of what they were Thurs-Sat.

It's probably more important to ask if the sales after the tail off are greater than those before the promo.

I ran a promo in mid Jan (1000 downloads) and though I never got a "swell", my sales did increase from about 0.3 per day to 2 per day. Without promos these continued to climb to 2.2 in Feb and 3 per day (one book) in March.

I'm currently waiting for a tail off on my second campaign so that I can judge the lasting effect.

Hi,
Interesting, I have now had 5 separate promo days over 3 months of my book 'Shelley The Lifeboat Labrador' and they have gone well. There is a swell after then it drops but I am finding that after my 4th promo it has stayed higher. I would not do a longer promotion than one day and have found to spread them is much better. I have also done a media release with cover image and sent this out to magazines etc and it has worked well for me with nice write ups. I set myself a task each day of at least one promotion to draw people to the Amazon kindle page. Hope this helps Shellydog (John)

I've done 2 one day promos, ad experienced the swell of sales afterwards. In my case, sales normalized about one month after the first promo , at a rate of 4-5 dales per day vs the 3 sales a day I was getting before. It is now 2 weeks after the second promo and I am down to 20 sales a day, (from 200) though I expect that to drop further.

It was a fun ride while it lasted

It depends on how far you get in the rankings during your free promo. If you crack the top 100, you will get a huge surge. It will taper off, but the swell will last a long time before it starts to fall (about a month).

That was my view. I got into #1 in several categories on my last promo and #13 on overall ranking. Throw enough mud...OK, not the best analogy... ;)

Everything dies off eventually if you don't keep promoting in all the other ways you need to promote. Capitalize on the momentum you have instead of letting it drop and having to build again.

Thanks for all your replies. Sales of the book in question have begun to dwindle to what it was before the promo. You are right about marketing strategies. I might try another promo day later next month.. Another novel of mine just keeps selling without any promo whatsoever, and continues to outsell my other novels. It just comes to show when the public speaks, they have the last word no matter what you do. I have read other threads here about marketing ideas and have found networking etc, does not really do an awful alot.

I'm hoping to garner some reviews on Shelfari or Amazon, but have found readers just do not express themsevles willingly, even with a free book. Will keep a check on this thread.
