Free Units Promo?

Hey guys.

I've published a collection of short stories in one, and published it yesterday. It went live a few hours later.

Today, I was just having a look at my month to date to see if it had sold any yet, and it says under free units promo (3).

Have amazon given my book away three times? I certainly haven't opted for a free promo, and have no such interest to do so.

Is this perhaps a bug?

Or am I going to get in trouble for not reading the, "Know your sales reports" thread.

Thanks.

Did you offer the e-book free as part of a matchbook deal? That's where you offer the e-book free or at a very reduced price if a customer buys the print edition.

Stevie,

something screwy is going on. I also saw two units go for free. I pulled the report and it said Goodreads Promo, which I checked and there isn't one.

Not having any idea who you are, I probably wouldn't know that. The suggestion was proffered only because it's a very common occurrence.

It has happened to me too. Although the sale registered as a PAID order on the order chart.

I've just looked at my reports and seen a bunch of 'frees' listed on various books. I do offer matchbook, but it seems odd these 'frees' have all appeared over night. Also one of my books had quite a few sales but is only showing half of them in the monthly report. I know the graph is just for orders and some never clear through as actual sales, but to have HALF missing seems extreme. Something a bit weird is going on!

Weird events like this seem to cluster at the end/beginning of a month.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

Actually, thinking back, I seem to recall seeing somewhere that Amazon and its affiliates can 'choose' to offer your book free for a time. Guess we should check the T&Cs.

Stevie,

KDP support came back with...

I apologize for the inconvenience caused.

The situation you report of Free Goodreads Giveaway unit is a result of a general system malfunction impacting most of our authors, we have received confirmation from our Technical team that they were actively working on it to resolve this irregularity. I want to offer my deepest apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I've also checked and see that the royalties is accrued for the sales which are mistakenly mentioned as Free Goodreads. I can confirm that you'll be receiving the royalties for the sales that was mentioned as Free Goodreads Giveaway on sales reports.

Please be aware that Amazon takes all security-related matters very seriously and your account security is our top priority. We have policies and security measures in place to ensure that your personal information and your book content remains secure with us.

Errors like this are usually corrected shortly after they're reported.

Thanks for your patience while we fix this problem.

........

In the future, Stevie, it’s probably better to address problems of this nature with KDP Support directly in order to get “hopefully” the correct answer. I go in here every so often for amusement but for serious questions related to KDP and Createspace issues, it would be better to ask questions within Facebook groups created for just that. If the members don’t know the answer, instead of guessing they will find it out or direct you to where you can get it. KDP does not respond on here and I doubt they even come in.

Hello
I enrolled my book on Kindle Select to use the free promotions but in doing so they removed the
availability in Puerto Rico. When I enrolled It did not say it was for some countries only. Is there a problem with Puerto Rico to use free promotions? I hope you can help me

Hi Mary Lynn,

I expect it's a temporary glitch at the start of the promo as it should go free everywhere (Worldwide), including Puerto Rico, especially since Puerto Rico is a US territory, not a country.

A different problem.

I arranged a free book promo on a title "The Miranda Revolution" so that I would tell people it was available free. I then looked at the amazon.com site during the promotion and it was not listed as being free but as having the usual price.

Confused?

Hi, sorry. I was on no sleep and didn't read your response properly. It was more like, "but wait! I don't even have a printed edition!?" But then I realised you meant, either way, you can chose to select 'free' on matchbox.

:) My proper response should have been, "I'll go and check it out...... nope, I didn't select the free option.
