I published four of my books on paperback through createspace and clicked the link to also publish on kindle. I assumed that would be the end of it and I wouldn't have to double check the conversion, but today, I downloaded a kindle version of one of my books and the format is a mess. The title page is cut in half and chapter breaks happen mid-page. Is this a common problem? What needs to be done to fix this issue? I shouldn't have to go through and correct the format myself as I have already slaved over uploading the correct format for createspace.

Multiple people have reported problems similar to yours--a CreateSpace pdf makes a crummy ebook.

Yes, you'll have to fix it yourself. Go back to your original file. Copy it all (the text only, not headers, page numbers, etc.) into a nice, clean, unformatted Word file. Set it up using Styles--for most of your text, it's just 12 point Times New Roman, single space, justified, first line paragraph indent 0.3 inches (set on the first-line-special tab under Format-Paragraph), no space before or after paragraphs.

A separate Style for chapter headings (centered, a bigger font, space before & after), page breaks at the ends of chapters, and you're there. Formatting for an ebook is far easier than print.

Go to your Bookshelf. Click the three dots on the right ... and choose Edit Content. Where your current messed-up file is uploaded, upload your new Word document. Click Publish on the last page to make the change take effect.

You won't be able to get a new copy of the new version yourself, because you already downloaded the old, unless you use the Contact link at lower right to ask KDP to "push" the new version to your Kindle.

PS You also need a table of contents (without page numbers). Get Amazon's free book, Building your Book for Kindle, that tells how to do it. ( I make ePubs and the process is different.)

It's such a common problem that I have put the solution in my sig file; see below.

Formatting for print is entirely different than for digital. See the third post on my blog for more.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

Why, aren't you the publisher?
