Hi There

I can see the options, but I haven't yet bought my own books. I will do it and wait to be able to answer your question. Now since I have both "request printed proof" and request "author copes" I guess I can really order both. The page also asks which market I want to buy from, that is .com; .uk, .fr
As for the price, it's $4.5, not including shipping fees. This is basically the price I was paying on Createspace since I use the 5x8 size, and it makes up for 300 pages. (no pictures)

Fascinating, thanks. When this finally gets sorted out, it will certainly be a plus for European author-publishers, who really can't afford to pay USPS rates for a proof copy. (And though it may be presented as an author copy, what you are getting is almost certainly a proof, if it's only available to you before the book is published.)

Please report back on this, especially about where it's printed. So far, I've only ever heard of books being printed in the UK and in Poland. That information should be on the last page.

And tell us also if the front cover is watermarked, or if it says PROOF on the last page.

Thank you!

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

Good luck! -- NJ

Hi Notjohn

I received the paperback book today. It's really an author copy, with no "proof" sign or any other visible watermarking. It was printed in Poland. As for the quality, when compared to the copy I had bought from CreateSpace (different cover but same book specifications) I can't see any obvious difference.

Best

I had the same issue with "Order Author Copies" not appearing in my bookshelf menu/options. So I contacted customer support after reading all the related posts, but wanting a more solid answer. They replied quickly and explained that since ordering Author Copies is in Beta test mode, it will only work for select publishers until further notice. However they suggested this alternative (below) which is very doable as a temporary solution. Lower your retail price, buy your copies, raise your retail price again.++++++++++++ I hope it helps you as well...

Author copies are a beta feature we’re testing with selected publishers. We're working to make it more widely available to better serve our publishers.

You will need to order your book on Amazon.com at the retail price.

For the mean time the option I can offer is to change the price of your paperback book to the lowest price allowed. When the price changes on the detail page you can make your purchase and after your purchase reverse the price back to its list price. You will still receive royalties for your purchase.

You can set and change list prices for your paperback under the Paperback Pricing section in your Bookshelf:

1. Log in to your Bookshelf at https://kdp.amazon.com/bookshelf.
2. Click the ellipsis button ("…") under Paperback Actions next to the book you want to update.
3. Select "Edit Paperback Rights & Pricing."

You can set and change list prices by marketplace as long as they're higher than the minimum list price (based on Printing Cost / Royalty Rate) and lower than the maximum list price ($250 (US), €250 (EU) or Ұ30,000 (JP)).

Full-size books -- 200-300 pages -- cost about $3.50 at CreateSpace. Why anyone sticks with this slow-motion rollout of KDP Print (now fifteen months and counting) is beyond me.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

This is not working for me either. Did it finally work for you?

EDIT - got to the last posts. So Amazon isn't actually making author copies available to everyone. A lot of fuss for nothing.

No need to pull up an old post to find out what's happening with KDP-Print and author copies. Just read the three dozen or so that have been posted since then by writers who do not publish with CreateSpace. KDP-Print is only making them available to a randomly selected few; if it's not on your menu, you were not selected.
