Hi everyone. Well I'm brand new to both writing and publishing. I'm writing under the name of Aurora Birchwood. I used a publishing company to set my account up and publish my book (Dawn Of The Ancients) on here, now they've done that I'm on my own. I have to be completely honest the whole process is completely bewildering. I have no idea what to do, from the whole KPD select and what that entails, and furthermore is it worth doing, to how to promote and gift. I'm not very good at doing things like this, everyone makes it sound like it's a doddle and I dare say for most it probably is lol. Anyway if someone would like to give me (in layman's terms) some advice and support, help this old hippie chick out that would be great

Welcome to the forums. All other things aside, I think "Rora Birchwood" is a snappier nom.

Hello, and welcome to the world of self publishing!

The first thing you should do is verify you can see your book on this site. Click the Bookshelf link at the top. You should see a book entry like:

DAWN OF............... || ebook || $5.99 USD || KINDLE EBOOK ACTIONS
THE ANCIENTS..... || LIVE....|| ASIN:xxxxxx || Promote and Advertise...... || (small button labeled '...')

ASIN: xxxx is your ebook ID and is unique to your eBook in the Amazon system.
The button at the far right with the ellipsis on it, lets you take the following actions on your book:

If you click on Enroll and Promote, it will take you to the section asking you to enroll in KDP Select. That's a 90 day program where you agree to keep your book exclusive to Amazon and they give you access to benefits. This means you can only share 10% of your book to places outside of Amazon. For instance, I use Instafreebie to get email addresses and I put a sample of my book up there for people to get for free. I only share the first two chapters to stay under the 10% limit so I don't violate the terms I agreed to.

Since your book was newly added, you might not be able to do something like a Kindle Countdown Deal. That should be explained to you with warning triangles and Why? links. You can also hover over the Learn More links to get more info on what each item does.

Your book is already enrolled in Select, which means readers like myself who pay a subscription fee can read your book for free. As the reader reads your pages, and that info gets uploaded, you'll see page reads on your Reports form.

So the next thing you should do is click on the Reports link at the top. The first tab is called Sales Dashboard. Any sales or page reads will show up here. Month-to-Date shows everything for the month. And the other tabs are pretty useless until you get paid royalties.

So that's the quick and dirty on KDP. The other thing you'll want to look at is your Author Central account. You have an author page because I went to it from your book. So that means you'll also have an account to set that up and change things.

Click this link to visit the Author Central site and log in: Author Central
The first page gives you a bit of info on what to do.
Click on Author Page link at top to get to the page where you can change your Biography (currently blank) and upload a photo of yourself or something fun if you don't want to use your own image.

Click on Books link at the top and you should see your book listed. If you click on your book, you get sent to a place where you can edit your Product Description and other stuff.

Sales Info and Customer Reviews aren't really useful right now until you sell some books and get some customer reviews.

Anyway, take a look at those two areas and see if this stuff makes more sense now.

If the account is not in your name (is in the name of the publishing company), you cannot do a thing. It is up to the publisher.

Hi C Gold,

Thank you for your in depth reply there is a lot of helpful information contained in your answer. I really appreciate you taking the time to help. I'm guessing and hoping that once I do this a few more times I'll be more confident in what I'm doing, but in the meantime it's nice that I've got somewhere to go if I'm having problems. Some of the things you've suggested I have already done, the author page I've yet to fill in. I think I've signed up for KDP select, I have a scheduled countdown for mid January but I'm still not sure why I can't lower the price before the countdown begins. It would be amazing if I could charge the listed price but as a brand new author that simply isn't credible. Anyway many thanks again

Oh, I don't know. Aurora Birchwood sounds like a perfectly pleasant lady of good character. Rora Birchwood, on the other hand, sounds like she took in Anne Shirley for the sole reason of forcing her to look after her five sets of twins, and beats the poor girl each time she's caught daydreaming.

Welcome to KDP! The reason you can't lower your price is because a Countdown is supposed to be a limited-time offer, not the usual low-low price. It's "counting down" until it goes back up again (so you can't lower it after the Countdown either for a while). What price did you set? Too low a price for a full-length book can suggest desperation. Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. The publishing firm I used set the price for both paperback and eBook which I think is too high. Being a novice here I didn't realise that the price would be fixed until the promotion ends. Hopefully I'll quickly get the hang of this especially as someone else replied with a much easier to understand explanation :-)

FWIW, Aurora sounds like it has more class.

Good luck in your publishing here on KDP.

I hope you aren't writing in the hope of becoming rich. Those days are gone thanks to amazon and their pages read scam which was started to offset the loss brought on by returned ebooks from dissatisfied customers, and after seeing the million-plus slush pile ... what else is there to expect.
Best of luck, but whatever you do, do not spend any money on anything pertaining to your book, you are the author, you get paid and nobody else.

My advice is to be patient. Pay attention to this forum and read, read, read. If you have a specific question, you can always google it. You'd be surprised how quickly you'll get an answer. We are artists who run a business. Take both of these careers seriously. The old cliches apply: write a great story, see that it's well-edited, have an attractive cover, catchy blurb and then advertise using Amazon ads. Be prepared to feel foolish sometimes. And when you do, hold your head up and steel yourself. You'll get there. I'm slowly developing readers but it has taken me years and truth be told, it's not THAT many readers. I love what I do and I do receive royalties every month and have for years but I still need to write that bestseller so that I can be an "overnight success." Most of all, HAVE FUN WITH IT. And yes, I'm shouting. ;-)
