I'll parrot another thread. Writing isn't a get rich quick scheme. If you need money ASAP you are better off finding a second job. For most people, earning money via writing takes time, effort, and a lot of books.

If you want to write books in the best selling genres, in fiction that would be mystery/thriller/crime, romance, paranormal/UF, and other science fiction and fantasy. Your books will have professional covers. Your contents will be professionally edited. And you'll need several books in a single series that are all exciting to readers in that genre. You'll want to read a lot in that genre if you haven't already so you can get a feel for what's expected.

To add to C. Gold's excellent points, most KDP authors are lucky to sell more than a handful of books ever. With at least 6 million ebooks on Amazon, it's far too easy to get lost in the mix. Less than 1/10 of 1% of ebook authors make better than $4000 a month, and it took them a while, a lot of books, a lot of promotion, and a lot of continuing very hard work to get there.

Yes, it's dead easy for beginners to make that sort of a good money publishing a book. Give it a try before you wake up.

Self-help and poetry, or better yet, a combination of the two:

To embark upon a journey of
The betterment of your soul
There's one thing you must
Have: a goal, goal, goal!

I agree with Mr. Gold, and am amazed by self-help books--that they sell--there must be a lot of needy folks out there

you probably could make money selling a "how to be a lone gunman"--though those losers usually steal books

I wish the government would read some self-help books on how to stop online sites from radicalizing loners

I try to sell light, rom com fiction, and am harassed and stalked by FB & twitter operators--

I am kind of paranoid about using a real photo of myself--worried about identity theft--etc.

recently, I was unable to post a profile photo because the site obviously thought it wasn't a real photo

there is a general lack of focus out there--a lot of porn--incest being the worst--I don't favor censorship--but promoting crime is wrong

Fortunately for you, there are hundreds of underserved hot literary niches in Amazon where readers are clamoring for books but few have been published. Supply books to these underserved readerships and your books will literally sell themselves, instantly leaping to the top of the leader board and setting you on the road to becoming a Kindle Millionaire. Here are just a few examples:
  • Vampire Buddhist nuns
  • Crosstime romance with humans and dinosaurs
  • Zombie crocodile apocalypse
  • Girl Scout monster hunters
  • Billionaire werewolves
Good luck. And, remember: if you write it, they will buy it.

What was the name of that poster (he's not been about for a while) who was always banging on about "red-hot" sub-genres?

Oh, yes...that was him!

He's probably not been around because he's too busy writing teen vampire/werewolf/shape-shifter novellas.

I published my first novel in April of 2014 and my fifth in April of 2016. They are available for Kindle and in paperback. I have earned $121.00 to date. I write science fiction and fantasy, which are both fairly popular, but that is part of the problem. If you publish something completely different no one will take a chance on it. If you publish something in the most popular genre it becomes lost. Even those who see decent sales to start always seem to taper off and often stall.
The best way, in my opinion, is to not expect sales by writing what you think will sell, but instead write what you are passionate about writing. That passion will be reflected in the work, making it more likely to take off if the right readers find it.

BL, Your story should be an eyeopener for all newbies. Two and a half years for very little return, except of course that you are thoroughly enjoying yourself, writing about the worlds in your imagination. I applaud you for your effort and dedication to your craft.

Warning to Newbies This isn't a get rich quick proffesion!

Earn 2-5 k over what time period? For lifetime sales (20 years plus) any commercial book should be able to do that. By which I mean a conventional popular genre, competently written and following the necessary tropes satisfy that reader group--e.g. YA adventure, romance, technical manual.

Sal:

If you think that Billionaire Werewolves aren't already a niche, you're not paying attention. Visit LousyBookCovers.com and browse some of the real winners. You'll see PLENTY of Billionaire werewolves, and even billionaire werewolves in romance/urban erotica threesomes. Seriously, bro. Of course, you'll also see Dino Porn (really--can't make this s**t up!), and all sorts of other, well..shall we call them niche genres? (I mean, seriously, who wants to boink a lizard?????)
