Kindle Unlimited - how does it work?

Hi there all,

I have published an ebook using Kindle Create and have now enrolled in KDP Select. Offering customers the book for free for 5 days, I thought it would then be an easy few clicks to download the book. However it seems they must first download Kindle Unlimited (free for 30 days and then be automatically signed up to a £7.99 a month plan).

Is this really the case? I thought the point of the free promotion was to make it easy for people to download and easy for writers to get their book out there. Also, when you preview the ebook with the 'Look Inside' button, the formatting is shoddy compared to the actual ebook.

Can anyone shed some light on these?

Thank you very much,

Tom

If it’s free, then anyone can download the book. They don’t need to have a KU account to do so.

Either they are starting something new that we are not aware of or you clicked on something that didn't pertain to what you were trying to do.

Not if you format it correctly!

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Prime Directive is GIGO.

Thank you for your messages.

It was a bit confusing when for a free offer, you still have to click on 'Buy now' to download the free ebook. Clicking 'Read for £0.00' leads you to KU. A Colombian also messaged me to say that the free promo wasn't available in his country! It read, "Ivan, this title is not available for you. Due to copyright restrictions, the Kindle title you're trying to purchase is not available in your country: Colombia."

Slightly frustrating considering my ebook is for English language learners!! https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B078HNX3BV

A bit disappointed it takes so long for the cover photo to update but I guess that's my fault for being to quick to publish before being happy with everything. I'll have a look at those formatting options in the future, cheers!

If you're sending people a link to the U.K. store, as you did here, anyone with an Amazon account elsewhere will be told it's unavailable -- customers must buy from their own stores. Buying a book is not difficult, but customers must know which button to push...not exactly rocket surgery. Anyone who's bought anything on Amazon previously should be able to figure it out in a second or two.

Unless you're looking for brutally honest critiques about cover, blurb or contents, it's not a good idea to post links to your books. Most of our newbies don't realize that doing so is akin to jumping into a shark tank. Many of our forum members just can't help themselves when they see a link. Some people might also tell you that offering your only book free is not a good marketing strategy -- not only do you lose customers who might have paid for it but you have no other book for them to buy if they like the book. But you're the publisher, so it doesn't matter what others think.

Good luck with your writing.
