Hi everybody and happy holidays!
Trying to publish my first book. So my problems are that in a computer and all testers and my fire kindle all looks good but my friend downloaded on black and white kindle through the cloud and all fonts messed up.
It's a children's book and if it will be a problem I just going to turn all pages into pictures. But what is a mistake?
I have created epub through InDesign. Used Georgia font.
TIA

Have you read many Kindle books?

I really don't know what you did, or indeed what your friend did (the e-ink Kindle and the Cloud Reader are two very different things).

Perhaps if you gave us the ASIN of your book?

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Hi Maya,

Don’t waste your time or energy making amazing combinations because only a few people will be able to admire them. If you publish on (KDP), there is a strong possibility that the fonts you choose will not be taken into consideration.

This is the most important problem when publishing ePub or Kindle book. You don't have any control over typefaces.

InDesign is not the best choice for a reflowable e-book and the font will be stripped.

You seem to have lost a lot of the spaces between words - I viewed it on a 9" tablet using Kindle for Android. If you are familiar with HTML you could try loading the epub into Sigil, which is a free program, and see if you can see what the issue is.
Otherwise the book looks good. You might try raising this problem on an InDesign forum, assuming there is one. The solution might be very simple.

Sharing a simple link is not nearly as difficult as formatting...

But in the future, I want to know what to do with fonts.

For most of us, the only thing to do with fonts is to ignore them. I don't even use Courier any longer, and Courier/monospace is built into every Kindle or app. Beyond that, leave fonts to the professionals, and expect to pay for the service.

Very nice illustrations!
And yes, fonts should part of your book.
You will have the perfect control of your design.

Maya:

First, font embedding is typically done by professionals, because it's done in HTML, inside the ebook. Typically, fonts exported from InDesign don't automatically 'take' because they are often encrypted. An encrypted font won't work, when uploaded at the KDP.

Moreover--and here's something that SOMEBODY should have told you--KCR doesn't display embedded fonts. It sounds to me that you made the book as a reflowable eBook, not fixed-layout. If that's correct, then, KCR will not display the fonts. If you have a kids' book, then you should be looking at making it in fixed-layout, because that DOES preserve a) layout and b) fonts (sorta--in a different way, but, nonetheless, they'll work.)

Good luck, and don't let the KCR thing shake you--your results are the same that anyone else would have, if they viewed a reflowable ebook, with fonts, in KCR. OK? Your book, however, is one of the few that most likely should be Fixed-layout, and I hardly tell anyone that.

Thank you for your kindness. I did write in fixed-layout formatting file. And it's only showing bad over cloud download.
But thank you, everybody, will take a look. I will just make fonts a part of the image. I might guess that font over image is a cause problem and at most children's book its a part of image, unfortunately:(

Maya:

You said that you used an INDD file (InDesign). Unfortunately, I think you may have uploaded an ePUB, that was made in FXL by InDesign, and thought that made a fixed-layout MOBI file.

That's not what happens. Fixed-layout MOBI is a completely different thing, completely different HTML, than the fixed-layout ePUB file that is output by InDesign. You're not the first to make this mistake--there are an unfortunate number of IDIOTS out there who promulgate this idea, that you can upload a fixed-layout INDD-generated ePUB (or, for that matter, ANY fixed-layout ePUB) and automagically build a fixed-layout MOBI. That is absolutely, positively incorrect.

Is that what you did? Did you upload a fixed-layout ePUB, and thought you built a fixed-layout MOBI file?
