So I'm an American writer living in Japan. I have e-books listed at Amazon.jp. But if I try to set up Kindle Publishing for paperback copies, will they have to be printed in the U.S. and shipped overseas, or does Amazon.jp do any printing in Asia?

If possible, you would be much better off to do your paperback at CreateSpace (it is also Amazon).
To answer your question, I don't know but I doubt they have anything for paperbacks (Kindle or CreateSpace) in Japan or Asia.

KDP Print does sell printed books on the Japanese site, but no idea as to whether they're printed locally or not. Japan appears to be the only Asian sales outlet.

My CreateSpace paperbacks are sold on the JP store. The translation of the source is as follows: This item is sold and shipped by Amazon.co.jp. You can use gift wrapping so I reckon they are printed locally.

(Books sold on the Australian and Canadian stores are usually sourced by the Book Depository, using CreateSpace's "expanded distribution" option, which pays a smaller royalty, and which is not available for KDP Print.)

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ
