The question is interesting and as I researched, here is publishing company in my thought:
A publishing company is a company that will publish your work. All books have been the mainstay in the past. Manuals, textbooks, industry publications. Really book publishing companies have published it all, but with the advent of the world wide web, ultra-cheap publishing technology and ebooks, we can comfortably say that traditional book publishers are no longer publishing the majority of books.

The publisher is YOU. You can list your name or what you want. Another option, leave that part out.

Put a great deal of thought into this, just as you would into your author name. I use a different "imprint" (publisher name) for each name I write under.

It can be anything you like, within reason. I would not, for example, claim to be Oxford University Press, or indeed any university press. Similarly, I wouldn't add & Co or Inc unless I had actually filed articles of incorporation. Or Doubleday or Knopf.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

Apparently, the USA isn't the only country handing out participation trophies.
