Scrivener to Word in one page?

I am a first time Scrivener user, and just finished my first book.

The person editing my book does not have Scrivener, and wanted me to convert it to Word for him.

While I have tried the "Export to doc. and docx." file function in Scrivener, the chapters come out as separate Word pages instead of just one long Word doc.

I was wondering if there is a way to export the book (maybe even in one click) to Word, and have the entire book saved as just ONE Word doc?

Thanks!

I've tried this a few times, but it seems like all the chapters (at least the way I have them set up) each save as a single doc.

Any suggestions, or thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

I don't know how you are doing things but you might try this:
Open ONE Word.doc. Go to each chapter and copy it, then see if you can paste it into the Word.doc.
Add each chapter.

Clarification: Add each chapter one at a time.

Why would you want to export your scriv doc to Word? Scrivener is fully capable of exporting your scriv doc to Kindle mobi or epub format and you can upload both these formats direct to KDP. So just write your ebook in Scrivener then just export it as a mobi or epub. My own preference would always be to export as epub in order to finish-off my ebook in html the way I prefer.

Also, exporting your scriv doc to Word has several unseen disadvantages. Scrivener v2(what follows does not apply to the new v3) uses RTF format which means that whenever you export to Word using Scrivener then all your Word headings would not be formatted using proper heading styles. So, after you export as a Word doc then you would have to re-format all your headings properly again using heading styles and you would have to also re-create your TOC. The gist of what I'm saying is that exporting a Word doc from Scrivener v2 will not give you a standard Word doc but will give you a hybrid that is entirely unsuited to KDP uploads. These are some good reasons why exporting from Scrivener v2 as a Word doc for upload to KDP is really not such a good idea.

Why not try my free Sigil plugins now available on MobileRead?

OpenDocHTMLImport - converts ODT HTML(Writer) docs directly to epub.

NormalizeScrivEpub - reformats, finishes off and normalizes Scrivener-generated epubs

LogicalTOCStyler - allows users to easily style the Logical TOC(Device TOC) as they prefer

You can download all these free plugins from The Sigil Plugin Index on the MR Forum

Thanks.

I did try that, and it does work. I was just looking for a way to one-click it.

I'm only converting it since my editor uses Word. I found out how to do each chapter as a page, but I was wondering if there was a way to export the entire book that would make it look like one long Word doc page.

Well if your converting Word to scrivener format there is a very quick and convenient way of automatically importing a Word doc. I'm using Scrivener 2 on Windows -- here's how I import my Word docs into Scrivener:

*In Word, mark all your main section and chapter headings by putting a '#' symbol to the left and on the same line as all your chapter/section headings. You should select these headings according to what you want to see in your TOC when you export your doc to epub or mobi.

*In Scrivener, select File > Import > Import and Split . Select your Word file location and then press OK.

Your whole Word doc will then be imported into Scrivener and automatically split into sections/chapter files(according to your mark-up) in a matter of seconds.

Thanks but no, I'm writing everything in Scrivener. The only reason I'm messing with Word is for the editing.

Editing in Word? Why aren't you editing your ebook in Scrivener? :)

I don't think I explained this correctly. What I meant was:

I am writing my book in Scrivener.

The person editing my book does not have Scrivener, and thus, needs it converted to Word.

I was wondering what the quickest, easiest way to do that was.

I updated my OP with this info as well, so I hope this makes more sense now?

Thanks for clarifying. Unfortunately, in your last post you did not mention that somebody else needed to edit your ebook in Word which was why the reasons for doing so were a bit muddy.

If you want a reasonably easy export format that will work in Word for editing then why note just try exporting from Scrivener in Word docx format. The page size and margins might need some adjustment in the exported Word doc version but that would be easy enough to remedy in MS Word. The other option you have is simply to export your scriv doc as an RTF doc which could also be easily opened and read in MS Word without any problems.

I've also found another easy way that will give you a reasonably formatted Word doc from Scrivener. Just compile your scriv doc as a Web Page. Then just open that Web page using MS Word. And if you switch formats in MS Word by clicking on View > Print Layout, this seems to give a problem-free display that does not have the margin problems that you get when you directly export from Scrivener as a Word doc.

I just tried this and it works great! While not a one click method, it does show my editor pretty much what I'm looking at.

Thanks for your help William. I really appreciate it!

I hope your editor is doing this for free. Your editor should have any tool needed.
