I need some serious help. I am based in the U.K. I currently have 3 fiction books available, but I have only sold a total of 44 copies. Being new to all this what do I need to do to make kindle readers aware of my books.

I enrolled my book in the KDP program, then offered it for free. While the free promo copies provided no royalties, I put a copy in 310 people's hands. On both sides of the Altlantic. (I live in Alubuquerque, NM, USA). I figure that if 310 people each tell 1 other person, I'll sell a couple hundred more copies, then each of them will tell 1 friend, and my sales may reach the thousands.

Hello,

I think it's really helpful to read some books about marketing on the internet to really know the wealth of possibilities available to you. There are some free ones out there, I just downloaded one called "How to sell fiction" from http://www.efictionmag.com/ (I haven't read it yet so can't tell you if it's great)
I attached it here.

But you can also find some free ebooks about marketing in general.

Basically, you can't just be an author. You need to learn to market yourself effectively as well.

And connect Twitter, Facebook, Blog, and Goodreads all together and use them as a casual list.
(eventually you would want to gather an e-mail list....but you can leave this until later. )

But basically this list of people are your precious readers, and your job is to build a relationship with them in which you give them useful information for free, spoilers, heads up on Special promotion prices, etc.... and in return, they trust you, and buy your books.
It's like building a friendship.... except you treat hundreds of people as though they are only one person.
It may take time at first, but things will turn up.
I'm currently beefing up my marketing as well. :D

When all else fails. Trust in the list. There are a lot of successful people (like Kiss) who only used list marketing.

This is a must read for all authors of digital books:

"The 1st Ten Steps - 10 proven steps to build a solid foundation for your ebook using free social networking".

The strategy is sound.

If you don't have time to devote to a strategy but you appreciate you aren't going to get far without one, then you must hire the services of a professional Virtual Assistant who specialises in digital marketing for Authors.

One such highly recommended person is Rhianne Griffiths (view her professional portfolio on LinkedIn).

She can be contacted at LadyBizBiz@gmail.com

or on Twitter at @LadyBizBiz

or on Facebook at 'Virtual Assistants in Wales'

or on Google+ at Rhianne Griffiths

Good luck with your digital marketing strategy ... you won't get far without one ... here's hoping you get as far as John Locke who sold 1 million eBooks in 3 months.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I will be sure to check it out.

As I am coming to find out, internet marketing turns into a full time job after a while, so eventually Virtual Assistants, or subscription accounts like twollow are necessary if you want to generate massive income.

I won't get an assistant yet. But soon enough, it will become necessary.... If I want to make John Locke money... :D

P.s. I read that very short book I posted above and it is actually a really great, basic starting point for anyone interested. It's not very specific, but it does outline the basic ideas and give a few resources for where to go next.

Doug Lance (the author of the e-book) is also a very good, FREE resource for self-published authors.

Take Care. And I hope this helps. :D

How is that working for you?

My guess is that the 310 people that take a freebie, 10 MAY read more then what they can see using Look Inside.

What's others think?

I have a love/hate relationship with freebies.

Like many others, I followed the advice to offer freebies when I first started, and still do from time to time (last was to test out the Select program).

However, I've given away roughly 10k copies. I certainly haven't seen much by way of return for those.

Some reviews, yes...about 65 for one free novella I've since retired, and 2-3 good ones for two of my Select titles.

Other than that, nada. Of those who read and gave good reviews, only one actually purchased another of my titles that I'm aware of.

I see the point in offering a freebie when you're first starting out, in order to garner some reader attention. But once you have a few titles out, I don't think freebies actually help.

I would think that the more titles you have, the more possible to get sales due to a freebie promo.

Yesterday, I did a freebie on volume 2 of what is currently a 3 volume set of 35 page erotica with the 4th edition due out in a few days.

I got about 175 downloads on volume 2 with one sale/one return on volume 1 thusfar. Pretty obvious that the buyer of volume 2 just did a quick read and refund.

Hopefully, I will get some voulme 1/3/4 in the next few days.
