Helppppppp!

I have formatted my book using several types of programs, including Kindle Create and the latest attempted was using KDP's own template. I spent, quite literally hours, making sure each chapter started on a new page...at the top, not halfway down the page ...etc.

Each time up upload it onto the book building page (for lack of a better word) it uploads fine, but then I check it in the previewer ...everything I did was messed up!!! The chapters are on different pages the spacing is wrong the photos are not where I put them.......***screams***

What's with that???? I have attempted this about 15 times how...it has taken me days.....hence pulling my hair out

Not sure if you used MS Word to write your book - but if you wrote your book on that program, you should be using styles and inserting page breaks to ensure formatting is correct. If you're not sure how to do these things, you must invest some time to learn. You can google MS Word styles and find information on how to use styles when you are writing.

Hope this helps!

Good luck!

Gosh, where to start other than "start again"? Hopefully someone will have a better idea but my suggestion is to do what I suggested a sentence ago. Start again.
Make a copy of your book and save it as plain text. Then in Word apply styles to every element. So a style for the first paragraph in each chapter without an indent then a style for the rest of the paragraphs with a small indent. Headings treated likewise - don't just increase font size and make them bigger. Create a new style for headings and apply that.
Images can be difficult. They must be inserted, not pasted in.
:)
You might need another of those.
:)
Or even two.
:) :)
It can be done. No hair need be sacrificed.

Download the free smash*words guide to formatting. Then spend some time learning how to format. Not hard, just a bit time consuming at first.

For a leading para non-indent, the O.P. may need to define an indent of 0.01" to get around KDP processing, or else she'll still get an indent. Or has that changed?

I used Reedsy to format my book and everything went well. You have to post your chapters one at a time into their editor, but that only took me a couple of hours. And I think the MS Word code doesn't carry in with it, which is what happens in a lot of other editors. For example, when I copied my blurb into Amazon's author page I couldn't ad a paragraph break with hitting enter. I went into html and saw there was all kinds of junk there.

Reedsy is free. You just have to register. Once you have the book finished you export it to either an ePub or PDF. I selected ePub and that uploaded just fine to KDP.

Anne:

It sounds to me as though, perhaps, you are expecting the ebook to look exactly like your Word file, or, perhaps, you are expecting the output to function like print. Maybe, for example, you floated text around your images (wrapped them, in other words). Or, maybe you used the "enter" key to create vertical whitespace, between, say, the top of a page and your chapter head. Did you do that?

It sounds like your chapter heads are showing up in one big long running sequence, after the bottom of the previous chapter, maybe? OR, are you having issues with the chapter NOT starting at the top of the page? It's not really clear what you mean. When you say, "(t)he chapters are on different pages," well, normally, they're supposed to be; chapters typically start on a new page. Then you say that the "...spacing is wrong," but you don't say HOW it's wrong. Lastly, you say that the "photos aren't where (you) put them," but again, you don't say the "how" of where they are appearing.

eBooks are not like print, not at all. Nor do eBooks (HTML) recognize "empty paragraphs," which is what you create, if you just hit the enter key to position something. EBooks also do not have tabs--so if you used those to position something, they'll be completely ignored, as will multiple spaces.

While some folks will tell you to use the Smashwords Style Guide, that's only useful if you are formatting fiction, or something very, very simple, and honestly, it's overkill unless you have completely screwed up your source file (Word, presumably?, as you used Kindle Create at some point?)

Are you at all familiar with eBooks? Have you an e-reader, of any kind? Do you know what repagination is, when you change screens or font sizes, and the text reflows and repaginates?

Wow, Hitch.....you are speaking another language to me. LOL I already published the e-book...didn't have too much trouble doing that. It is the paper book I have having problems with.

I have read the other posts and realize I have to learn how to use the word program properly.

Thanks for you help

It is the paper book I have having problems with.

But you didn't say that, and you spoke of Kindle Create, which is for ebooks.

Really, you should go to CreateSpace, use their Guided option, and upload a perfect PDF, which you can do in Word if it doesn't depend overmuch on images.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

In Word (2013):
File/Options, Save, Embed fonts in the file (checkbox at the bottom of the dialog)
File/Save As, PDF, and click on the Options button to make sure to check ISO blah blah compliant (PDF/A)

Think of PDF as what you see is what you get for the paperback version. Get the PDF how you want it looking, then upload, and it should be how you want it.

Hi Wendy,

I could kiss you. It worked!! I used Reedsy and it was relatively easy...although I did end up with a part one and part two that I didn't want and couldn't get rid of, but it is fine.

Thank you ever so much. You saved my head of hair!!
