I created a print copy of my latest e-book, using the same photos, formatted the same, just saved at different resolutions. The previewer looked fine, but when I got an author copy, all the detail in the darker pictures was gone! It was just a mass of black, impossible to distinguish! I can't even tell what it was meant to be. Do I re-edit all the photos to be much brighter and hope it doesn't go wrong the other way?

I think I would contact Customer Service below at 'Contact Us' and explain the situation. They may offer to send you a new copy for proofing, which hopefully would be correct.

Beth,
sounds as if you have set Grey Scale or Black and White in your Word Picture formatting menu.

Examine the picture Format menu, click on Picture and under Image Control see what one of the troublesome ones have been set at.

I use the "Automatic" setting on most of mine and for print upload as a PDF.

Cheers

It's a nice idea, but those appear fine in the previewer on amazon. Also, I don't edit the photos inside Word- I simply insert them. They seem to be set at the normal color settings.

Did you use CreateSpace or KDP to print the book?

Beth,
I've always found that covers come out darker when printed off. It's easily rectified by jiggling the contrast, brightness and colour balance in you photo software

Photos should be RGB for on screen, and CMYK for print. When software auto-switches, things can darken.
Did you do a test print, even just on regular 8halfx11 paper at your local print shop?
Wasting $10 on some test prints might save a lot of hassle.
