Help..Scary Formatting Issues!!

HI guys,

I personally don't own a Kindle, so yesterday I downloaded a Kindle App for my PC and as a bit of a laugh more than anything else I downloaded my own book.. Yeah sad I know... (Ashen by PJ White)
I was then horrified to see that approx 5-6mm of the text on the right edge of the page was missing on every line... The sample I looked at before I uploaded my book onto KDP looked OK, as does the preview that you can view on Amazon, so I am at a little bit concerned that anyone that has downloaded my book to date (About 250 people) will be having the same problem...
My book is actually free to download this weekend, so if someone could take a look at this for me and confirm if I need to check the formatting and upload my book again, I would be hugely grateful!

Huge thanks to anyone that responds.

Pete

Are you saying that you did not use the online Preview or better yet the downloadable "enhanced previewer"? And that you do not own the device that you presume to publish for? And that you would not ordinarily buy your book to check it out for real? And that you want us to help you?

Hey notjohn, hope you are just having a little bit of fun here as it would be nice to help with these issues.
FYI - when i upload a word file to KDP for conversion and preview it with online previewer it shows huge chunks of content missing. I have Kindle previewer and Kindle for PC and a Kindle device and I get a totally different appearance on every device. Sometimes bullets show up, sometimes they don't. Line spacing between bullets varies everywhere. Formatting of headings seems to disappear when linked to from certain controls.
It's really confusing and I have great empathy for this publisher...I only wish I knew the answers myself. Ideally, we shouldn't be having these issues. Since you are obviously a very experienced publisher, maybe you could offer us some insight into how to overcome or prevent these issues. i for one would be grateful for your advice

Dude!

Your Book is a MESS!

I am betting this was a PDF!

I managed to get a successful view on my kindle for PC by mininizing the font and maxing out the screen width!

Plus the text is double spaced!

This is what the KDP would consider to be in need of a Critical Update!

There is something definitely wrong but I am not sure what!

You text is not being handled by the reader software, it dosen't properly wrap in in the alloted screen space.

This is caused by a width greater than 100% being set on your text-containing elements. While I have only tested your book on Kindle for PC, this defect should affect all Kindle Format 8-based readers and you will want to fix it as quickly as possible.

How you'll go about doing that will depend on what software you're using to format your book and how you've applied the formatting within that software. If you are formatting directly in HTML just remove or change any widths that are larger than 100% and it should clear up, though I of course couldn't guarantee it without looking at the file itself.

Thanks for all the useful tips everybody. (Especially you Gail) I had no idea how tricky the formatting could be and that the text can display differently depending on what Kindle reader you have. I think I've managed to sort the problem and will be re-publishing later today.

Be sure to notify KDP Support about the change!

This would Definitely Qualify as a Critical Update!

(Be sure to remove The double spacing also makes reading on a Kindle difficult)

Here is the link to the update information

http://forums.kindledirectpublishing.com/kdpforums/thread.jspa?threadID=34933

Also here is a link to the support:

kdp-support@amazon.com <kdp-support@amazon.com>

In your email heading use "Critical Update Completed"

And in your body of the email give as much info as you can

include the ASIN Number of your book and give a time /date of the published update -- Be sure to copy/paste the ASIN it is too easy to mess the thing up by typing it zeros look like O's!

Hi mrlasers,

I've re-formatted my book and downloaded the advanced Kindle Previewer and strangely it looks fine in all Kindle reader formats apart from Kindle Fire, where characters are still missing from the right hand margin? I'm now wondering if it would read normally on an actual Kindle Fire machine and if this problem relates solely to the PC Kindle App? If this is the case I'm really not sure what else to try?

Best regards

Pete

How are you formatting your book?

You seem to be being done in by the KF8 standard!

I think that if you run the book through Calibre, it may be that you can get a book file with fewer problems.

Whar is your original source?

Word? PC Mac??

Hey JT,

The source file is Word.
I've been formatting my manuscripts in a standard manuscript format, double line spacing, new paragraph starting 5 characters inset etc.
Though taking the advice of several of you kind people, I have now re-formatted to 1.5 line spacing and set the margin at 2.7cm on both sides of the page.
The newly formatted version should be up and running later today so hopefully this has sorted the problem, if not then I guess I may need to try Calibre.
Of course I will have to figure out how use it and where to get it from. Lol

**Your Book is a MESS!**

Given that he made no effort whatever to check it before he published, that is hardly surprising.

I think they are changing the way the KDP Bookshelf handles Word documents!

It used to handle things like Double spacing and stuff like that and ignore it!
