I specifically said that this wasn't aimed at any individuals or any specific thread, but a general observation on the decline of the forum as a helpful and informative board into a highly political one.
As such, I won't be drawn into discussing just one of the dozens of such like threads, for that would merely be involving myself in politics that I neither know much about or care to learn the background to.
Consider this merely one perception of the board from a newbie, and perhaps use it as a catalyst for introspection. You have just brought politics that I care little about onto this tread too.
It makes for an unwelcoming environment for newcomers and lurkers who are perhaps discouraged from contributing. That's just the writers. This forum is indexed in Google, it can be read by your potential or existing reader base, and prospective publishers.
Involving yourselves in frequent conflict and politics will only serve to paint you in a negative light in the eyes of anybody who may be glancing in your direction.
When somebody searches for 'Darr Crow', they may see conflict. They don't see you as right, or you as wrong, they merely see conflict.
The beatles once said "let's write a swimming pool".
Your reply to me just then is 137 words in length. You have 2789 posts. That could be 382,093 words.
How many words do you have for sale in Kindle? How much do you earn per 382,093 words? How much could you be earning if you had a further 382,093 words for sale?
Involving yourselves in unproductive activities is unprofessional, and primarily because it shows poor business sense.
A baker does not give away free bread, a butcher does not give away free sausages, so why give away so many of your words for free?
A baker slides pies from the oven,
The butcher constructs his kabob.
So many yummy delights to explore,
You know what you can explore? Oh nevermind.
I think a couple of things are true. First, writers have HUGE egos. Totally just massive. Way worse than artists of any other genre. I've looked into it. So, that helps immensely on the conflict front. And the whole anonymity thing really just adds fuel to the fire. I do think that this forum can continue to be a wonderful resource. However, it is a public forum... so that is what you get... the public foruming, warts and all. I know (from personal experience) that it is practically impossible to ignore something, especially when you think that something is wrong, and you think by speaking up you can help to right that wrong. It's really quite a messy system with perverse incentives. I guess that is democracy for you. And I like democracy (almost as much as I like turtles).
Just remember, no matter how much you might wish this place were different, no one is forcing you to read any of the things written on this forum. If someone says something you dislike or disagree with, you can always just walk away.
A little follow-up, I know you're trying to help the board's value here, and that's commendable.
I just don't think you or I have really been here long enough to know whether or not this board's quality is dropping. Based on what Inyun and others have said, drama has always been a big part of this forum. When I joined in early April, there were tons of promotion posts, tons of arguments, tons of political bickering, and tons of great and helpful posts.
Seems pretty much the same now as it was when I joined two and half months ago. I'm not sure what has deteriorated. I had to look to find the good writing posts then, and I still have to look. Seems the same to me.
That said, your frustration at the bickering is understandable. Sorry for sounding like I was attacking you for voicing an opinion.
"Several "writers" here have reviews that are ALL from other "writers." Can you say review swap? Why is it some have managed to be successful without all the dirty tricks, including spamming the hell out of this board, while others are total failures even with every dirty trick they can pull. When is KDP, CS, and Amazon going to put a stop to this?"
Why do you care?
With all due respect, there are 1.4 million books on Kindle.
Whatever you do, don't ever read the Warrior Forum, or head to oDesk where you will find people ordering 100 Kindle books for $1000.
Don't go to fiverr where you will find people offering three 5 star reviews for $5.
I think you would have a nervous breakdown or a heart attack if you realized the real scope of the problem.
Of course, you probably do realize, you just wanted a reason to call somebody out for confrontation?
I love it, Sure learn a lot just reading these post. If someone needs called out, do it what's stopping you. Oh we look at the borrow rate and the date you joined, did you contribute anything. Your past post, how much you spammm K---------. Who you tell what to do, as if it matters. But mostly I injoy watching people enteract with others, they are all friends, and feel better for being able to call each other names. So just what is your problem kubecki???
