Uploaded my book from the word document today, but at various places throughout the text, there is a number (in this case "46") that appears on the right side of the page with lots of space above and below it... creating a big white area. What has to be done to eliminate this so the text looks professional and is easier to follow? I've attached an image demonstrating what I'm talking about. That "46" shouldn't be there and there should be normal spacing between those two paragraphs.

Go to smashwords.com and download their (free) guide. Follow the directions on "nuking" your document. Do that, then format, then you should be good.

See if you can highlight to delete. A header or footer might come up you didn't realize was there. And, yes, as suggested, get Smashwords' style guide. It's great to have next to the computer when formatting.

The advice about removing all of the formatting should do it. It looks like you have page numbers in headers.

In the long run, if you plan to do this again, you'd be ahead of the game if you saved the file as html, then examined the html to get rid of the gremlins. Some familiarity with html (which Kindle books are built on, behind the scenes) is useful to any author-publisher.

I used a feature in Word to remove headers and footers, and that removed the number and kept it from periodically appearing. However, there's still a space that appears there that I have to get rid of. I'll do more research on this, but thanks for the assistance so far!

Use the "nuke" option. It will clear everything and give you a blank slate to work from.
