I did a 2 day free promo Friday and Saturday on two of my titles. It's the end of Sunday and both still show that they're free even though the promo has supposedly ended. Anyone else seeing the same thing? Is Amazon's KDP screwed up in almost every area right now? I see there are problems with lots of other features and reports as well...
Same thing on my book. They were 10 hours late to start and now I can't get them to end the one day promo...yesterday only. It has cost me hundreds of copies. I emailed them 4 times with no response. There are lots of complaints and no one doing anything.
Let one more voice be added. Amazon offered to give a free day because of yesterday's issue. But I've had a "free day" all day since around 12 PM EDST yesterday through today and extending into Monday.
The timing of promos is supposedly based on midnight Pacific time, but that wouldn't explain your problem. I've had several 1 and 2 days promos, and all have both started and ended at midnight Seattle time. But I haven't had one lately, and the complaints about this seem to be growing.
I'm really unhappy with the stuff-up with my latest KDP promotion not ending properly. It was scheduled for three days - June 21, 22 & 23. At the end of June 23, it went back from $0.00 to $3.99 and went off the free lists, as it was meant to do, but then the 'sales kept adding up as numbers in the 'free units promo' rather than in sales. So, people were seeing it as $3.99, and were clicking on it to buy it, but I didn't get any money... not sure if the buyers got the book for free even though they expected to pay $3.99 or if they paid the $3.99 as they expected and the glitch in KDP just kept all the money for Amazon while giving me more numbers in the 'free units promo' column. THEN the price stayed at $3.99 but it went back on the free lists - marked 'free' on the free list but $3.99 on its page. That went on for about 24 hours but I couldn't get anyone at Amazon to do anything about it. Now it's back off the free list, the price is still $3.99, but the purchases are still just going in my 'free units promo' column.
I spent a lot of time and effort marketing this promo and I hoped that, like my last one with the other book in the series, that there would be good sales in the days following the free promotion - well, there have been good sales, but either the buyers haven't been charged even though they expected to pay for the book, or they were charged and Amazon kept 100% of sales.
Considering that I've sold quite a few books starting in November 2011 - not thousands and thousands, but they've been in the top ten in several of their genres for much of the period and they usually sell a few to ten a day - and I've only received two cheques in that time for what seems to be a lot less than I've earned, I'm pretty disenchanted with everything to do with Amazon and KDP.
Sigh. In the ten minutes since I started writing that last post, there have been another three sales go into the 'free units promo' column even though the book is clearly marked $3.99 and has once more been taken off the free lists... I'd really like to know what is happening to the money. Are the buyers not being charged even though they are expecting to pay, or is Amazon keeping all the money? A few hundred dollars lost is nothing to Amazon, but to first year indies like me, it's quite significant.
Same problem here.
2 books scheduled for a 3 day promo 23 June. (I am on PST time) They went up on the UK site, but didn't go up in the US until 9:30am. And, a third book I hadn't scheduled also went up as free.
They were free until at least midnight on the 24th.
I can't say that it's the end of the world, but it would be nice to have the promos work as they should. It did mess up some of the marketing.
Also, for all the folks who got all those free copies - let's hope a few of them bother to write reviews.
It can take several hours to several days for all the FREE books to show on your report. The FREE books you are seeing now are from the weekend. In my considerable experience it is typical for KDP reports to be slow to update on weekend, especially the last full weekend of a month, as they are processing previous periods royalties.
I had a FREE promotion in early April that just showed 3 FREE books this week.
I could understand the lag in free books showing up on the reports if this was always how it happened, but the other free promos I did recently didn't have this problem. One had over 10,000 books downloaded and it stopped when it was supposed to stop, it went off the free lists as it was supposed to do, and the sales started while the numbers in the free column remained the same - successful. This promo wasn't as successful with just under 3000 books being downloaded, with hundreds showing up on the reports as given away in the 24 hours AFTER the promo ended, and the the price was put back in place but it was still showing up on the free lists for over 24 hours after the promo had ended.
Still, if their computers can't handle doing reports as well as calculating royalties at the same time, I guess that gives an excuse for the continual downloads of free books showing up after the promotion finished, but it doesn't explain why the price went back on to the book (no longer $0.00) while it was still showing up on the free lists (after going OFF the free lists, as it was meant to, and then got put back on there) as 'free', even though it was clearly $3.99 when you clicked on the book. Glitches make me wary as they are often a sign of other things going wrong.
I arranged a 3-day free promo. After 3 days it was still going - I registered a CANCELLED. Still going.
Day 5 - I emailed them and asked them to stop it immediately. They responded that it is currently listed at the normal sale price and sent me the link to click on. I click - what do I find? Sale price listed as 0.00.
This is day 6 and it is still listed as free.
Surely there should be some compensation for books given away without permission!
Ah, I think I know what the problem is. Amazon definitely needs to fix this.
kiwiauthor - the reason your book is showing as FREE for you on Amazon.com and it's not for Amazon's customer support is because they accessed your book page from an IP address not in Australia (or any of the other ones still showing the FREE prices).
I have a U.S. IP address and show a price, yet when I use a proxy address in the Netherlands, I show the FREE promo price still in effect.
For all others who have U.S. IP addresses and still getting FREE downloads in your reports, yet your FREE Promo is over, follow these instructions:
1) Enter your book page URL here ==> http://www.hidemyass.com/proxy/#
2) Click the 'Advanced options'
3) Click the 'Server' drop down menu and select "NL, - Amsterdam"
4) Click the "Hide My Ass!" button
If your book is still showing as FREE, you need to contact support and have them use that link I gave above (copy the instructions for them also, so they make sure to pick the 'NL-Amsterdam' proxy), so they can see that there is indeed a problem on their side regarding this.
Also, link them to this thread so they can see that this problem is abundant and happening to many people.
Oh, I should mention ... my own FREE promo ended Jun 29, yet I am still having FREE downloads as of today.
I dismissed it as 'late downloads' as some had mentioned, but I thought this was a little too long, lol. When I read kiwi's post saying that they were seeing their book as FREE, yet Amazon Customer Support didn't ... it dawned on me to try accessing my book page through a proxy IP and sure enough, that's when I saw that my book was still showing as FREE in Amsterdam.
So, don't assume that this will just go away. Contact support and let them know the issue. Again, link to this thread.
Thanks for those instructions. Doing that, I see that my book is still listed as free overseas. I'm so angry about this. Customer support has been anything but, and I continue to rack up free DL's more than 2 weeks after my promo. 600+
