That was totally the nudge I needed. I"m going black on FB and this forum until my WIP is at 30,000 words. I won't see any replies to this message, because it will take a while!

1. Your cover sells the book, as it is what grabs the readers attention.

2. Your writing brings them back for the next book.

I like this one Paul...

Also, I like the "treat your reader with 100% respect"

Thanks for all the great replies y'all.

Sometimes we can spend so much time "getting ready to get ready" and talking about writing, that we lose the steam and gumption to actually write and then... FINISH it.

Myself, I think there's an inversely proportional relation between enthusiasm and hard work as time marches on in any creative endeavor.

Like one record producer told me after I recorded my first EP and was getting frustrated with the sound engineer: "A record or CD is never finished... you just decide to stop working on it."

Amen...

Sometimes, you can fiddle with all the levels forever.

One movie producer told me: "Next!" is the biggest lesson they learn in Hollywood... once it's out there... move on... roll up your sleeves and get to work on the next project. In other words, you get to a point where you just say: "Ship it!"

Hi Brian,

I wish to quote your anecdote in answer to a question in an interview that I am giving to a blog:

Q: What advice would you give someone who is just beginning their own novel?
A: It's too early for me to proffer advice. However, I'd like to share here an anecdote narrated by Brian Shell in an authors' forum: "When I decided .... past 17 years."

May I please?

Some good advice...

1. Read a lot. Read lots of what you know you like, try reading new things. Read by different authors with different styles and voices. All of this will help you learn to understand the rules of word use, grammar, plot, and pacing in ways that you might not be able to explain, but you'll know. .... and hey, you might find new favorites.

2. Write now, you can edit it later to make it perfect. Start with having something.

3. revise. save. revise again. save again. repeat.

4. Write something that you'll enjoy, something that you'd want to read - because you'll be reading it over and over as you edit.

5. Spell-check is NOT a substitute for proof-reading and editing!

6. Do your research. if it's wrong, then change it.

7. reread your stuff before you begin the sequel, so you don't forget details - like Cathy's eye color, or that Bev has a tattoo on her left arm, not her right. And Gary died in a car wreck, not by drowning.

8. You (non-specific general you) can sit there wallowing in your emotions and your misery, or you can use it to fuel your writing. Which do you think gets more stories finished?

Ok, here goes.....

1. Stop writing.
2. Never pet a dog that's on fire.
3. Make all of your characters refer to themselves in the third person.

Sure Vasant.... please feel free to add my quote in your blog. Actually, thank you for taking the time to ask... and to use my name as the source of it too.
