Problems with Mobipocket Creator

I know, I know - some would say that Mobipocket itself IS a problem. But it's the only system I've used to build my books, and it's the one I know. Anyway, it's been fine up until two days ago; I've used it to do about a dozen drafts of my current manuscript in the last week or so. Then today when I was right in the middle of using it, I suddenly got a message that "a problem caused Mobipocket Creator to shut down", and it did. This happened several times. I even went online and redownloaded it, just in case there was a more recent version, but it still kept shutting down on me. Help!

Your best bet is going to be to remove MPC and then re install it.

(Of course I would suggest leaving it un installed :) )

Windows did a bunch of updates a few days back and there may be a conflict

dude, I told you several times, your PC is on the fritz. There is nothing wrong with either MPC or K4PC.

Man - actually, this is a different computer than the one my K4PC wouldn't work on! Maybe it's just me on the fritz. :-( I do most of my work on the other one (which is just a couple years old), share files with the two using Dropbox, and seldom use this one (which is older) for anything but Mobi.

JT - I did end up uninstalling Mobi and reinstalling it, but that didn't help. Actually, it's worse now, because now I get the error message the moment I try to open Mobi instead of half way through building my book.

Any idea what updates got installed (that maybe I could uninstall) that might be contributing to the problem?

You don't have to use MobiPocket Creator. You will obtain better results with less effort if you convert your Word file to the Kindle format on the KDP website. I am copying and pasting the procedure from my notes:

TESTING YOUR EBOOK. If you haven't already done so, insert a bookmark "toc" above the title of your table of contents in the Word file. Save your Word file (the .docx or .doc file, not the .htm file). You need to convert the Word file into a Kindle book using the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) website as follows. You won't have to publish your ebook right away after the conversion. As described in Amazon's tutorial "Building Your Book for Kindle," save the Word file as a "web page, filtered" and click "Yes" when Word gives you a warning. Upload the .htm file to KDP: the "Edit Book Details" web page, section 5, "Upload Your Book File." If your Word file contains pictures, then (PC users) hold down the "Ctrl" key and click on the .htm file and on the associated folder (has a similar name); after that, right-click and select "Send To" → "Compressed (zipped) Folder." Double-click the resulting .zip file to open it and make sure you have both the .htm file and the folder with pictures inside. Close the .zip file and upload it to the KDP website (the "Edit Book Details" web page). After KDP completes the conversion, you will find the MOBI file (Kindle book) in the "Downloadable Previewer," the link "Download Book Preview File." Do not download the "Previewer" program from the "Downloadable Previewer" if you already installed Kindle Previewer on your computer (same thing). Don't forget to upload a cover image to KDP on the same web page, before downloading the .mobi file from the "Downloadable Previewer." I recommend that the cover image be a JPEG 600 x 800 pixels (width x height). Image resolution (dpi) and size in kilobytes don't matter (ignore Product Image Guidelines).

Open the .mobi file in Kindle Previewer and take a look at the formatting. Change the "Devices" menu to see what your ebook looks like on various Kindle devices.

Wow, I can't believe I never knew you could upload directly to the KDP website! I tried it and it worked like a dream... and a very easy dream, at that! Why in the world have I been wasting my time with Mobipocket for the last two and a half years?! Thank you, Man, for the info and for your very clear and detailed explanation - once again you've saved me! :-)

Because it used to be necessary. The reason it works like a dream now is that Amazon has added those features to their KDP software.

Thanks again to Man. His is the best, simplest and most sensible comment I've seen on the topic. And it works.

Moral: every layer of process (such as the Mobipocket) adds a layer of time, effort and potential for problems and errors, either human, nonhuman or inhuman.

BTW the Mobipocket help forum pages are filled with junk postings--ads for Viagra, etc. Doesn't inspire much confidence in the entire operation.

I also found it interesting to open two versions (Web and Web Filtered) side by side (using two KDP proofers) to see how they look on various platforms. Not much difference, but there is some. The Web Filtered definitely produced results that were consistently closer to the original intent.

Now if KDP could only work the bugs out of the quirky LITB feature on Amazon/Kindle product page...

That's because the Mobipocket software was purchased nearly 6 years ago by Amazon, and the forums have simply been left to stand, as some of the other original products by that company continued to exist. However, there has not been an update to that product since, what, 2005?

MBPCreator no longer exists as a separate entity, and is not supported any longer by that website. The forums aren't there to inspire confidence.

Now if KDP could only work the bugs out of the quirky LITB feature on Amazon/Kindle product page...

It's not actually "quirky." It represents the actual HTML inside the book, whereas the Kindle devices make certain "assumptions" about how the book should look. For example, there's not really a "page break" in HTML, per se; but one can be emulated in eBooks. The LITB doesn't show "page breaks" because they don't exist in HTML--it renders as it would in a regular browser, without the assistance of javascript or JSON. It's not quirky, and properly-made books will look just fine--very much like they look on the devices--in the LITB.

It represents the actual HTML inside the book

This has been the case from the beginning, so I'm mystified as to why people are just discovering it or anyhow just complaining about it. When Look Inside was first made available, I had to quick go back and re-format two of my books. They had been uploaded as Word docs saved to (exported to) html and they were rife with formatting errors, usually bold or center tags that weren't closed off.

That was good practice for the Fire tablet's debut last year.
