am new to KDP/CreateSpace and i am a Mac user with Tiger OS, 10.4.11. i know that PDF to KDP is not recommended and everything i read suggests Microsoft Word. i do NOT have that. would 'PDF to Word Converter' work alright? anyone know where i can find either of them for MAC, the cheapest? thanks for all help!

Actually, Word is the worst of the major options, which are: Word, html or a zip file with html, or epub. But it will work if you're very careful.

Your best bet if you have a Mac is to use Pages or Open Office.

you are VERY helpful, i appreciate your input! i found out that OPEN OFFICE can work on Mac Tiger OS 10.4.11 ONLY if INTEL-BASED. for mine, PPC, it is NEO OFFICE and i DL'd it and it seems fine. it is same-same as Open Office, ONLY for PPC machines. so......will 'neo office' work ok with KDP? i would think so.

Microsoft Word is ABSOLUTELY the best route to a perfectly-formatted Kindle ebook.

You should really only consider Microsoft Word, if you are able to get hold of a version from 2005 - 2007. Using a Mac installed with the Tiger OS, you may find it problematic using a recent version of Word.

Microsoft Word was originally created for the original Mac computers, between 1985 and 1995, when Microsoft released its Windows "95 OS. You would do best to stick with the Apple Pages suite for your book creation on an older Mac OSX.

Alternatively, you would get a better result using the Open Office software. many other Mac users on these forums use Open Office. If for any reason you may have difficulties that need rectifying or queries about formatting. You will find it easier asking and getting an answer from other users here than if you used neo office.

Neo Office is based on Open Office code, so they ate very much alike.
The native file format used by both software is the same: ODT, so you can use any tool that converts an ODT file to a MOBI file.
You can also save in DOC format, but the results are not always perfect.

I'm a Mac user too, I use OpenOffice and Alkinea to do everything.

will be getting Leopard 10.5 PPC for my Mac. does alkinea support 10.5 PPC? NOT the intel version! the website doesn't say. i have DL'd Neo Office and now find i can get Open Office and MS Office 8 for Mac compatible with Leopard 10.5 PPC. important distinction...PPC and Intel version. what would be the better choice, Open Office or MS Word?

It depends what you like. There are those (millions of them) who absolutely swear by Word. There are others (millions of them - including me) who swear AT it. At the end of the day, you don't have to use Word if you don't want to. Open Office Writer has been cited as a worthwhile substitute, which it is. Alternatively, as a Mac user, there is no reason why you shouldn't use Pages, the latest version of which can output a very nice ePub that uploads directly to KDP for conversion. I see you are still running Tiger. Bearing in mind that Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion have been and gone since your machine was built - and Mountain Lion is entering its final phase (Mavericks is due in a few months), I don't know whether the latest version of Pages will run, but it might be worth checking. Pay no regard to the dismissive comments about Pages that you will see from some posters on these forums. They are written by people who know next to nothing about the program.

I tried downloading Pages for my iMac (OSX version 10.6.8) and Apple's website tells me I can't run it, I need OSX 10.8.x, so unless I upgrade, I can't run Pages...

Alkinea on OS X is built in universal binaries, but I never tried in on a PPC Mac.
