Not everyone has a good voice or a bit of acting ability to make a performance out of reading a story, but if you can, you might make some money reading your stuff. Where I live there are over one hundred senior retirement residences and some have program directors. Where I live each month a musician sings and dances for an hour while playing his guitar and gets fifty bucks for an hour. Following his advice I have begun readings of my short stories and have four appearances next month, which means $200, a lot more than I'll make in selling my books at KDP. I do not sell books, but some audience members have followed up and bought some. There's not much income from selling a few copies of a book, but being paid for a performance is very nice. This is better than a book signing only a few attend and nobody buys.
I'm told you'll get three nos for every yes, so keep on calling. Have you considered this?

I hadn't thought of doing this, Harley, so it's interesting to hear that you're having some success with it. I'm sure most of us would quite happily put our hands up and say we don't possess the patience or skill to be able to enthral an audience with our voices, but if you're able, it's a great way to make more of/from your book.

Thanks for putting the thought out there, and good luck with your future bookings.

J :)

I agree. I long ago gave up book signings. I found them awfully hard work, and they took up a whole afternoon that I could have spent outdoors or, if it was raining, writing another book. I'm sure it works great for David McCullough, who gets a line going out the door, and all he has to do is keep his head down and scribble his autograph, and maybe smile. I would sell maybe five books an hour.

Good luck! -- NJ
