Will KDP Reject Academic Book for No Interactive Elements?

I am an author who published a nonfiction academic book about Sufism about ten years ago. All my copies of my book were tragically destroyed along with my computer which contained the original book manuscript including the image files. The book is still in great demand and so I want to find a way to continue to make it available to students of Sufism.

I am attempting to use Kindle Textbook Creator to publish my textbook as a KDP Kindle ebook. I have PDF files of the book. I have my copyright registration and Library of Congress data. I do not believe I need to import images as they are b&w line drawings and appear clean in the PDF files. And as I have mentioned, the originals are no longer available to me.

I am worried that Amazon may reject my file if I do not have images or other media imported into my book. On their Kindle Textbook Creator page, they write: "If your textbook is primarily text-based, prepare your manuscript using Microsoft Word or a similar program."

However, the b&w line drawings I have in my book are no longer available to me. I very much want to preserve the formatting of the book as the book is considered an important work in this field. I believe it is important to offer researchers a good historical reproduction (via PDF) of the original book.

So, long story short - will Amazon KDP automatically reject my file submission from the Kindle Textbook Creator if it does not contain interactive elements (embedded audio, video, etc.)?

Thanks.

No. They will not reject your book for a lack of interactive elements.

In fact, a number of people have decided to use the textbook format when they have a pure-text version which would have been much better if they used normal Kindle reflowable formatting. Then they come on here and complain that their book cannot be read easily on many devices or at all on some.

Amazon is trying to warn you that fixed-format is not for everybody. They will not reject it because it falls outside the parameters of the normal fixed-format ebook.

They might however reject it if the pdfs are fuzzy or murky and people complain. As suggested on your other thread, it might still make sense to run the text through a good OCR, clean it up, and publish in normal Kindle format. You could include the images if they're fairly clear.

I'm happy to tell you that they won't reject your book for that reason. I am sorry to tell you that they won't reject the vast majority of what is uploaded to the KDP, either, including those that will probably turn off their readers from ever again buying a self-published book.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

Good luck! -- NJ
