Hello,

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've just spent a few hours trying to figure out how i, as a UK resident and citizen, can publish with Amazon?

i can't be the only UK citizen who wants to do this, but every time i search for how to do it i end up being redirected to Amazon's USA site, and it asks me for US tax information that its going to be impossible for me to get...
I feel like I'm trapped in a catch 22 situation.

If anyone can help me out with where to go and what to do then i would really appreciate it.

Thank you in advance for any advice,
Ben

I think you add your national insurance number if you are in the UK.
Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Ben,

You're right, there are plenty of us British authors here.

As Donna said, just use your NINO as your tax identification, and sign up for the double taxation exemption. That way, Amazon won't deduct any tax from your royalties.

You just have to register with HMRC as self employed, and pay your dues in the UK.

Don't worry that you have to use the .com site for most things. That's just where kdp sits.

Hope that helps.

You're not on the US Amazon store when you come to kdp.amazon.com. You're on the KDP platform, used by everyone except those publishing Japanese-language books, who use the JP platform.

As Donna says, enter your National Insurance number, and the software will guide you through. You should end with a zero withholding rate. In the late winter you will receive a statement from Amazon on your earnings. What you do with that is between you and the Inland Revenue or whatever it is called these days.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

I think the reason why some of my fellow Brits can get a bit confused, is because many spend their working lives not having to worry about complying with the tax authorities. This is because if you are employed by someone else, the employer has do all the tax reporting. The employee is on the Pay-As-You-Earn system (PAYE).

It's only the self-employed and company directors that need to think about tax returns. Hence to be confronted with a US withholding tax form, can be a bit daunting.

By contrast, all US citizens have to complete tax returns and consequently are much more familiar with such things.

  • Uploaded your well-written, perfectly formatted file to KDP for conversion.
  • Upload your professionally designed cover.
  • Complete all the metadata, including a great blurb and killer keywords.
  • Fill in tax info, including your NHS number to ensure 0% taxation by the IRS.
  • Under Marketing & Pricing choose Worldwide (which, oddly enough, includes England) and a price that allows you a 70% royalty.
  • Click publish.
  • Become a Kindle Millionaire

Sal, you are naughty!

When I add a statement like this, I do, at least, tell them this comment is me being sarcastic!

This poor fella might actually believe you! ;)

I don't know. From what our Indian posters assert, becoming a Kindle Millionaire is inevitable once you list your e-book on Amazon.

If not, at the very least they become best sellers.
