I am currently a beta author for paperback publishing on Amazon. I understand that authors can order their own paperbacks as wholesale orders, but not when they're in beta mode.

How to I get moved out of Beta?

You published with KDP-print-beta. It's the system that's in beta, not you personally.

Slowly and erratically, Amazon is telling individual authors they can order wholesale copies. If they haven't told you yet, you still can't.

You have two choices. You can unpublish your paperback and start over at CreateSpace, where you should have started in the first place. You can use the same cover and interior files. They allow you to buy at a discount, manufacturing cost plus shipping.

Or you can drop the price on your KDP print paperback to the minimum, order copies through the regular Amazon store, and put the price back up again once your books ship. You'll pay more than the manufacturing cost, and if anyone else buys the book during the time the price is down you'll get zero royalties, but the books will ship free if you have a Prime membership--and those in Britain find it much faster than waiting for a CreateSpace shipment from the US.

Some of us already have the ability to order wholesale copies on KDP, if this option does not appear for you -- you can either wait for it or price drop and order from a prime account for free shipping (which is probably the cheaper option anyway, at least for bulk orders).

CreateSpace is the cheaper option, at least for anyone located in the US.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

As a Canadian, Create Space is a nuisance to order through, but I'll take another look at it.
Thanks.

True, it's a bit pricey because of USPS shipping rates, which are higher than in most countries. When I mail a paperback to Europe, I figure that the postage is about the same as the retail price of the book. For that and other reasons, I've given up selling outside the US.

When you consider that KDP-Print doesn't sell at all in Canada, CreateSpace looks pretty good.

I can understand why not India and elsewhere (CreateSpace doesn't either), but Canada? If CreateSpace can make it happen in thirty days, why not KDP-Print? Just one of the many unsolvable mysteries of KDP-Print.
