I'm trying to publish a paperback version of my book and I purchased an ISBN through bowker, and I don't know what to put for the "Imprint." I've looked everywhere and I'm getting a bunch of different answers, does anyone know the right answer???

thanks

You list the name of your publishing company.

You probably should have taken the free ISBN offered by CreateSpace or KDP-Print. Think of a good name for a publishing company, or just put your own name if you want that to be the legal name for your publisher.

Buy buying your own ISBN you are declaring you are a publishing entity apart from CS or KDP. This is no big deal, just enter your name, pen name, or any other publishing name you want to use.

To follow up on this--if you're using a DBA (doing business as) name, say Excelsior Publishing Group, you may have to register the fictitious name with the city or county in which you reside. This is usually a one-time thing, and the registration fee is usually nominal--$10 or $15.

When you have thought of a name for your new publishing company :) check on line the name isn't already in use by someone. It could cause confusion if it is not to mention any legal issues.
In the UK ISBNs are run by Nielson who have a database where you record the details of your book and imprint name. In the US I guess Bowker do this. When everything has been completed your book will be listed on the Amazon store as "Published by XYZ Books" or whatever you have chosen. If you don't use your own ISBN it will probably just say "Independently published".

Well, it's in the last chapter of my Guide, but I am on the road and don't have it with me. As I recall, you do this on Bowker. You can also register your publisher imprint with the Library of Congress, which is a separate process and one that most self-pubbers probably don't bother with.

You need your publisher code, which is a cluster of digits following 978-1 (assuming you are in the US and writing in English). Bowker support will tell you exactly what the digits are.

This is BTW a good reason to buy 10 or 100 ISBNs at a time, so your publisher code will remain the same.

Good luck! -- NJ
