do you pay delivery charge if you do a free book promotion?

Hi Everyone,

We are new to self-publishing and would really appreciate advice from people who know more than us!

We recently published a children's book called Mindfulness for Vikings - which has a lot of illustrations and a hefty delivery charge! - but we reduced the image files so that it was just worth going for the 70% royalty. The paperback has done well in its first 5 weeks (nearly 400 sales) but the kindle has done next to nothing. We are planning a Christmas 'free book promotion' and we have two questions:
1. does Amazon charge the delivery charge even when the book is free? It doesn't seem to say this anywhere so we're presuming not (but hoping for a little reassurance!)
Also 2. is Christmas day / boxing day a daft time for a free promotion because everyone will be doing it and we will just disappear in the crowd?

Thanks so much for any responses!

1, No.

2. Probably.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

It sounds as though you're doing great with your paperback! Children's books tend to do much better in physical copy than as ebooks, so maybe you just shouldn't worry about ebook sales. (Maybe price the Matchbook at 99c, advertise that people can get both for only a buck more than paperback alone.)

I like the title. Sounds funny and subversive.

If you're doing a freebie giveaway, I hope you've thought through what you hope to achieve. Just giving an ebook away without a plan doesn't result in much beside people who otherwise might have bought getting the book for free. It used to be that you could count on word-of-mouth kicking in with a couple thousand freebies, but these days it takes tens of thousands (and most giveaways yield only scores moved out the door, not thousands). Good luck!

Thank you for that really helpful advice. We hadn't thought about it other than trying to let people know we were out there. It is the first book in a series, but we have no other books in the series as yet - so it was just an experiment to see what happened. We thought we pretty much had nothing to lose (as long as we didn't have to pay delivery charges!). But we will think it through a bit more next time. Happy Christmas! Leo

I agree that you have done wonderfully well with the paperback (a good argument for seasonal publishing -- I picture all those cynical uncles trying to find a present for their nephews and grabbing your book to show how clever they are!).

I don't see the point in a free "promotion," unless you hope to sell more paperbacks thereby. (Actually, in your case that might actually work.)

Come to think of it, you have proved to be the exception to two of my favorite rules, to wit: don't try to time your publication day, and

Never give anything away, away, away
That you can sell.
Ev'ry night, ev'ry day,
Try to remember, ma belle,
Never give anything away, away, away
That you can sell.

Happy Christmas! -- NJ

Ha ha! Thanks for the song - and yes, if we can get more PB sales off the back of a promotion, that would be great! That was what we were hoping for. But following advice on how few giveaways we might make and how tough word of mouth is to get, we'll keep our expectations low! It's all an experiment after all and great to have a forum like this to get advice.
Happy Christmas NJ!
