Thank you for all your input.

In fact, I was the one who asked the designer to create the cover like this: A Black Helmet on a Black Background, with one fiery eye and a bluish aura all around. But due to the image not showing up as it's suppose to be, the bluish Aura is simply missing on the thumbnail, so the helmet looks completely blended with the background. And he gave me two different versions of the images: one for the eBook and one for the paperback. He created the paperback based on the KDP template, so the resolution was exactly as specified (He was forthright about the fact that he had never created a KDP cover before).

But here's another funny thing I noticed today: When I open the pdf in the Windows Image Viewer, it looks fine. But when I open it using Acrobat reader, it looks like the image on the amazon page. I don't know what to do anymore. But yes, I will talk to the designer once more and see if he can help me out in any way.

As for some of the issues with the KDP, I will change it ASAP. Thanks for your advice. This is my first time, so I'm not really sure what I'm doing, haha.

There's a typo in the preface, "numerous of histories" should read "numerous histories" I think. There may be others, I didn't read much further. :)

Made a few changes according to all the helpful replies. Thank you.

I had the cover page designed by a designer from a company. I had good faith in their services, given the awesome website they designed for my business. Regardless, there's clearly an issue with this work anyway. I'd ask them to do a redesign, this time, with a different designer (Spoke to them about the issues and they're willing to do a redesign for no additional charge). Let's see if things work out a little better this time. If not, I'd look for a new artist altogether.

Mr. BLA, I really appreciate the gesture. I have the source files, but I'd rather not have you waste your precious time behind something that I'm willing to discard, anyway. Thanks again.

I still don't see a helmet.

In your next iteration or your redo, RR, I'd strongly suggest that you run the design by CoverCritics.com . They're a group of design professionals--who work on all kinds of different things, ad campaigns, book covers, movie posters, you-name-it--who donate their time there, to help people specifically with book cover designs. Your concept sounded good--in concept. But in execution, it's really lacking. Remember--your cover is NOTHING BUT CLICK BAIT. It has absolutely no other purpose--and unless I'm crazy, that cover, even in the colors that you wanted--isn't going to do what you want.

Best of luck.

I agree with this assessment. A book cover is the main advertisement for the book. Right now this cover is saying, "I'm black, I have bad arse flames, and I'm something unidentifiable. Click buy anyway?" Not gonna cut it.

OP - I wish you luck getting a new concept. I find that giving the artist background on my story, scenery, action, type of genre, character descriptions and letting them have free reign gives better results than my attempt to shoe horn a design on them. I gave my cover designer a list of existing cover images and what I liked or didn't like about each one as well. That worked out very well.

I wish you luck!

Here is a mockup of some ideas I had to improve the composition.

The background isn't plain black, offering better contrast and more interest.
Placing the fire behind the helmet highlights it, rather than causing the eye to focus on the bright flames which further pushes the helmet into the background on the original
Making the word 'LEGEND' larger grabs the eye and directs it to the rest of the title.
Bigger Name. You wrote this. Show the potential reader you're proud of it.

I didn't add the eyes inside the helmet, but if you want them, they should stand out. Maybe even be the same color as the flames.

I hope this helps.

Although I'm not wild about the fonts, those are simple to tweak. The entire cover is MUCH, MUCH more powerful, and much more likely to incite clicks, than the one being used now.

Again: if BL doesn't mind sharing this with you, you should take it to your designer, have him/her play with it a bit, submit it to CC.com, and run with it with whatever small changes you make pursuant to those critiques.

Good luck. Nice job, BL.

Thanks. I like the modern rune-style font of the original cover but didn't have one handy and wanted to get the mockup done ASAP.

Yeah, I'm not personally wild about the faux-modified-Papyrus of the original. There are a bunch of Runic faces available, and I'm hoping that the OP will take the time to look for a better choice. I mean, hell, Papyrus is even the butt of a joke on SNL, so, something that looks that close of Papyrus is not a good choice. Granted--the regular public isn't au fait to the sort of endless designer agony about fonts like Papyrus, Comic Sans, etc., but...it's still not a great choice and that font--the one on the cover--actually started life as a Papyrus replacement.

Offered FWIW, on this Christmas Eve Eve! :-)

His wasn't too bad. It was structured enough for a cover but simply too small. Some look like chicken scratch.

Agreed. I simply happen to be familiar with that one, specifically. (Long story short as possible--we had a book years ago, where the author insisted on using Papyrus. As it happens, at the time, one of the fonts that the KDP simply could not handle was--yes, you got it--Papyrus. We spent a week trying, testing, and discarding Papyrus clones and look-alikes. That one, as it happens, was the "lucky winner.") Anyway...I may very well be unfairly biased about it. ;-)

While the text is an improvement, the cover still fails to identify the genre of the story. This is a flaw in the original design. This is supposed to be a fantasy story with a group of people doing a quest.

When you have enough money for illustration:
Glenn Cook Fantasy Cover

Photo manip probably in decent price range:
Michael J. Sullivan Cover

Simpler Designs:
Sword
Black Cover
Dagger

All of these images have various tropes of fantasy or medieval combat elements on the cover to suggest what the book is about. You can find more ideas just scanning sword & sorcery fantasy book covers. I just grabbed these because they seemed useful ideas for a possible book cover for this book.
