I originally downloaded a docx file (first book) and discovered that the content toggle did not work. In the meantime I realized that a kdp file would do a much better job and the file looked great. It will not download to the manuscript. The save feature puts the kdp file in a new folder, under the right name but when examined it is still the unformatted docx file. Ideas? WDE

I don't know what a "kdp" file would be. If you upload a docx to the kdp platform, it should convert to a "mobi" file which is actually three different formats, one of which should display on whatever Kindle or app you load it onto. Short of that, I have no idea what you are trying to do.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

You fault description is quite confusing and somewhat muddy.

What is a 'kdp' file? Are you talking about a Word doc or epub or kpf file or what?

How did you create your ebook ? -- Did you use Word, Sigil, InDesign, Kindle Create etc ?

Did you upload your ebook as a Word doc or mobi or epub or kpf etc?

More info please!!

Why not try my free Sigil plugins now available on MobileRead?

GoogleZipImport - converts Google Doc HTML directly to epub format.

CustomCleanerPlus - an epub-specific custom cleaner for both html docs and epubs

StyleBender - manipulates, moves or removes html styles and inline styling at block level for epubs and html docs

You can download all these free plugins from The Sigil Plugin Index on the MR Forum

Let me be more clear...while working with Kindle Create, I took a docx file, uploaded it, made the changes to create and active TOC and added headings. When it saved, the changes did not take, and when uploaded no changes appeared. Rereading the instructions, I looked for the saved file in a "folder" and found a KPF (not kdp, kbp) which would not allow me to import, open are dink with it at all. I saved another copy of my docx file, went through the formatting process, saved it and when it published the file had no changes. One the third try they took, and I had a file that kept the changes, I loaded it over the old file per instructions, and when it "uploaded successfully" I discovered that it was a "book.com" file that I had never seen before. That has locked up any further attempts to upload anything. I have a message into support, but not sure if they are open on new years day.

You might have better luck uploading the *.docx file.

Just start a New Title if you can't work with the one you've got.

We UPLOAD books to the KDP. Think of it as the Cloud -- it's up high, right, so you upload to it?

I am confused with what you have done and are trying to do. With that, I noticed you said 'downloaded a docx file. Do you mean you tried to UPLOAD a docx file?

You also mentioned that 'it will not download to the manuscript'. Are you talking about downloaded to your computer or to the Amazon site?

What I do and I do not have any problems: I do my manuscript in Word.doc, formatted for a digital book. I upload the .doc file. IF I need to redo it, I adjust my manuscript in my computer and upload that OVER what is there.

Woody:

You're using Kindle Create, which, as you can easily see, most of the posters here don't use. Don't get confused--the .kpf file IS the file you'll upload to the KDP, when you are done tweaking/editing the book. OK?

Well, that's news to me because you cannot create an active doc TOC in Kindle Create -- it's just not possible. When you first open a Word doc in Kindle Create, at top left, you are asked to populate and format your "Table of Contents". Unfortunately, when Kindle refer to this in their how-to video on Kindle Jumpstart they call it "The Table of Contents". This is highly misleading because it is not for creating the doc TOC but is actually for creating only the Logical TOC or Nav TOC which shows on your Kindle device.

Also be aware that you cannot format everything when using Kindle Create. Before loading your Word doc into Kindle Create you should always ensure that you complete the following tasks in MS Word first:

  • Create your ebook doc TOC in Word
  • Create all internal and external links in Word.
  • Add all your ebook images in Word.
  • Add all the relevant bookmarks in Word for cover, toc and begin read which are used as links in the Kindle Go To menu.

After you have completed the above tasks then you can load your Word doc into Kindle Create which should only ever be used to format the headings and text in your ebook -- and nothing else.

Why not try my free Sigil plugins now available on MobileRead?

OpenDocHTMLImport - converts ODT HTML(Writer) docs directly to epub.

GoogleZipImport - converts Google Doc HTML directly to epub format.

NormalizeScrivEpub - reformats, finishes-off and normalizes Scrivener epubs.

You can download all these free plugins from The Sigil Plugin Index on the MR Forum

Those of you fine people who have tried to help, thank you and Happy New Year. What all of you have said, in essence is: this is your first book and you don't know what you are doing. Good read, you are correct. Download instead of Upload, KDP, KBF, KFC I get them all wrong. However, one of the things about everything I do is - I like to complete the job myself. That in this instance is beginning to wear thin. I am only moderately computer fluent and some things younger people learned long ago are not in my skill set.

That being said, I have already uploaded the ebook version of this book, formatted by Kindle Create with an active TOC and that is working fine. What I am having trouble with is the paperback file, using the same docx file that I used for ebook, formatted by kindle create as a paperback,

What the big issue for me right now is: the book.com file, which invented itself, Kindle Create nor I never intended to create a book.com file -- somehow, something I was doing took that name. It could be a chicken soup recipe for all I know. Can't open it. It just jumped in manuscript window in Content and NOW IT WILL NOT COME OUT, UPLOAD, DOWNLOAD OR GO AWAY. The Amozon page for my book says "in progress" and I'm getting errors that keep it from being published. I don't know what is in it so I don't want to publish book.com
Even an Amazon support person tried to remove it. Can't see anything happening until book.com goes away.

Now, the files "created" by Kindle. When a kpf is saved my Kindle Create with the Publish button, they create a file by the name I have chosen. You would think publishing it would just send it to your book upload...no. It saves the file by the name you choose with kpf after it. It usually is right below the Word file of the same name. BUT ... can't load it to the window in the Content section, can't open it to check it is correct, changed in any way, it just stays there - useless.

Do NOT trust the system to create something that should be correct. Trust only yourself.

If your paperback is on or started on the Kindle site. Delete it! On your Bookshelf, see the three dots to the far right and click there for the area to do so.

Next: Make a copy of your Word.doc.
Format it for paperback.
Save as a PDF.
Upload the PDF at CreateSpace which is also Amazon.

What you haven't told us is how you prepared and uploaded your book to KDP Print.

Did you use Kindle Create?

If you did use Kindle Create then, for an imprint book upload to KDP, you should perhaps have loaded a PDF version of your book into KC and not the Word version. Did you do that ?

And if you want to check what book.com contains, then just rename it and change the extension from book.com to book.txt and then open it with Notepad or any other text editor on your computer.
