Unable to upload Word docx file

Hi,

I uploaded a short story for Kindle only publication on November 26, 2017 and had no problems. I formatted the document using Word styles as advised.

About a month later I attempted to upload another short story of similar size and formatted the same way in Word but received the following error message:

"Your ZIP file contains files in the wrong format. Zip files can only contain HTML files and images. Other formats shouldn't be compressed into a ZIP file. Please refer to our >formatting guide for more information."

I contacted KDP support and was told to upgrade my internet browser and to clear my cache. I did both and the file still didn't load. I'm using a Chromebook. I installed Firefox on my Samsung tablet and was still unable to upload the file using Firefox. According to KDP support they were able to load the file so they thought it didn't have anything to do with the formatting of the file.

KDP support actually didn't seem to have any answers. I converted a couple of pages of the document into a PDF and it uploaded just fine but I'm not sure that a PDF is the way to go. Because of the PDF being accepted I decided to retype my document in Word because I thought maybe there was some weird formatting/coding things embedded in the file that I didn't know about. After formatting the document per KDP info and retyping it I just tried to upload it and received the error message that I pasted above.

I've read some of the formatting posts here in the forum and I don't think that I'm alone in having troubles uploading.

Here are some of my questions:
1) Does anyone know if KDP is currently experiencing problems accepting uploads of .docx files?
2) How do I turn my document into an HTML file? My Word Online doesn't appear to have a converter option.
3) Is HTML the best choice or is MOBI or something other suggested format?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks for any help/suggestions offered.

If you've properly formatted using Styles, just upload the document, no zip, for conversion.
Never use a PDF to make a reflowable e-book.

If your ebook does not contain images then save your file as .docx in the Word and upload the .docx file directly. If your ebook do contain images inside, then save your file as .html in the Word, zip the saved html file with the images and upload.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

As far as I know I didn't zip any files. I did save it as a docx and tried to upload the file. Maybe somehow I didn't properly format using Styles although I think that I formatted this document the same way I did the last document that uploaded with not problem.

I didn't know that a PDF shouldn't be used for a Kindle only book. Thanks for the info.

Hi, Vijay,

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my message.

There are no images in my document. Just text. I thought I did save it as a .docx file. When I uploaded the file it appeared to be a docx file.

Use latest version of the Word. If uploaded .docx file is still showing error, then try saving your file as .html or .htm in the Word and then upload it. Also there's one more option of saving it as .rtf in the Word and upload it. If still problem is not resolved, then there are online services which will convert your file to epub or mobi format but I have not used them so idk much about them. Mobi is the best choice to upload.

What is "Word online"? Is this a Microsoft subscription thing? You're paying a monthly fee?

This file you are uploading -- does it have an "extension" actually saying docx? So the file you upload is named something like mybook.docx?

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

It seems to me that your error message was quite clear about what was wrong with your upload.

After receiving the above error message did you then check that the directory containing your html doc contained the correct items? This directory should only ever contain one html file + all images. If there was anything else in that directory other than what I've mentioned then your upload to KDP will always fail.

And if you didn't specifically save your Word doc as Web Page, Filtered(*.htm, *.html) then your upload will also fail because your html file would be in the wrong html format..

Why not try my free Sigil plugins now available on MobileRead?

OpenDocHTMLImport - converts ODT HTML(Writer) docs directly to epub.

GoogleZipImport - converts Google Doc HTML directly to epub format.

NormalizeScrivEpub - reformats, finishes-off and normalizes Scrivener epubs.

You can download all these free plugins from The Sigil Plugin Index on the MR Forum

Hi, Vijay,

I'll check to see if I have the most updated Word. If so then I'll move on to the other options. I've been reading about Sigil so maybe I'll go that route.

Thanks!

Hi, Notjohn,

Thanks for taking the time to try to help me out.

Word Online is a subscription service although I use the free version. I have a Chromebook that comes with Google Docs but I subscribed to MS Office Online. Some of the features that are offered for a paid subscription aren't offered with the free version of the Office products.

The file that I'm uploading does have the extension ".docx" and yes the file is named something like "mybook.docx" :-) I'm confused because I uploaded a file that I prepared using Word online with the same extension and KDP accepted the file with no problem. That was at the end of November, though. I know that things can change and perhaps Word Online has been modified in some way so that I cannot upload files created using it anymore.

I'm confused by the error message because I didn't zip anything and I didn't try to upload an html file. But maybe KDP compresses the .docx files and turns then into htmls. I've read some of your posts and I understand that the Kindle editions of the books are simply web pages which means that they are essentially html files anyway. Might be best to upload them as such.

Anyway-thanks again.

How strange! Microsoft isn't known for giving stuff away, and certainly not the crown jewels. I see that the website is called products.office.com. It certainly looks like a Microsoft page, but why doesn't it say www.microsoft.com, where the cheapest option is $6.99 a month / $69.99 a year? (Or buy it for $109.99 -- quite a bargain, that! Perhaps I should upgrade to 2016.)

Later: okay, "Vali" at Microsoft assures me that it is indeed legitimate. I asked her why I would ever buy it if I can use it free, and she said "You have to be online at all times to use that." Of course I AM online all the time!

I am amazed.

But of course that doesn't explain why the docx file doesn't work.....

How fun that my question has led to your discovery of some free Microsoft products!!! The free stuff doesn't have all of the capabilities as the not-free stuff, though. I think Word Online won't do section breaks or tables of contents maybe. Also no saving as a web page that I can find so far. But for free it's pretty good.

As for why the docx file won't print-I think it may have something to do with Word Online. I have access to the fully powered Word program at work so during my lunch break I typed up a test page in Word and it uploaded just fine to KDP. The strangest thing is that my first short story formatted in Word Online uploaded too. One answer is some sort of change in Word Online that happened after November 26.

It's difficult for me to use the full powered MS Word at work so I'd like to be able to upload documents to KDP from home so my search for an answer to my problem continues.

I hope that you use some of Microsoft's free crown jewels just because you can and you are online all of the time!

Hi, William,

Thanks for taking the time to help me.

I didn't check the directory. I didn't create an html file that I know of. I was trying to upload a Word document. I don't know what happens during an upload and perhaps I made an html and didn't know it?

My file contains no images. Only text.

I definitely think uploading html files are the way to go instead of messing around with Word and .docx files.

Thanks again.

Susan, if you have a Word doc, you can clean up the html by running it through Word2CleanHtml dot com online. You can then turn that clean html into an acceptable ebook for Amazon (though not other online booksellers) by pasting the chapters into my Plan B template, which you can copy from my blog.

However, it definitely isn't as easy as uploading a Word doc. I was astounded to see that Microsoft now sells Word 2016 for $109. I think that would be a wise investment for you, assuming you can install software on your computer. (Is it a Chromebook?)

Here's another possibility: surely you know someone with Word installed. Can't you ask him or her to open your file and save it again, so that it actually does become a Word doc?

Another option is to download Word App on your android smartphone. Its free, no need to upgrade paying the money, free version will do all work. Open the file... ifyou need to upgrade file, it will show message to upgrade it to edit ... just click on upgrade it and save it. It automatically saves it as .docx file, and then upload on kdp. I have used Word App on my android smartphone to format, upload and edit all of my e-books, including two in regional language Marathi.
