The wrong version of my ebook was released today

Hi,
I had my ebook up for pre-sale with a pre-release version of the book. I submitted the final version on time, but have gotten two questions on it from KDP (public domain, copyright), which I have answered right away.

Unfortunately, this morning, when the book was released, the pre-release version was sent to everyone's kindle who pre-ordered.

Why wasn't that postponed if there were still questions about the book? Or why wasn't the final version sent out? Can someone from Amazon please contact me? I can't find a phone number to call anywhere and putting in a help request just gets me a response that I'll have an answer inf 24 hours or so.

The 'look inside' is wrong - and looks terrible. This is a really disheartening experience for a first time author :(

How will this be fixed? Will the correct version be sent to all the pre-orders with an apology email? Please.

Side note, I don't have any idea why I'm getting pushback from KDP on the final version - the only difference between the pre-release version and the final version is in the formatting and text editing - the content is the same.

Please help!
Thanks!
Dawn

Dawn, this is the author's forum, so nobody from Amazon will see your message.

When you use the 'contact us' button, you should then respond to the e-mail they sent you and keep the chain going to make sure it gets escalated from a bot to a person. Don't start a new chain or it starts at the bottom again.

If they have already sent you an email, then use that same one to complain about the pre-order mix up. Ask them to 'push' the correct version to everyone who received the wrong version, and send an e-mail explaining the mix up. They can easily push the book, but whether or not they'll issue the email I'm not sure. Still, if you don't ask you don't get.

As to the pushback, I don't think they actually check your book until you submit the final version on pre-orders. Otherwise they could be checking the same book over and over for nothing.

Hope that helps.

Good luck. J

Unfortunately, this is example number 32,756 of why most indie authors should not use KDP preorders.

Yes. Writerbn is right in this.

The only sensible way to use pre-orders - and especially for amateurs - is never to upload anything but a final, polished draft. Anything. Get it right the first time.

Then wait your 30, 60, 90 days or however long you want it to be on pre-order (which is largely useless for newcomers anyway) till actual publication.

You're not going to miss out on being rich and famous. Truly. You're not. What you will miss out on is screwups like the OP's.

KDP releases whatever you've uploaded. They don't review it for completeness and they don't pick and choose when version after version is uploaded. In theory, the period between uploading and release is for marketing, not rewriting and editing. I expect KDP will eventually bar small publishers from pre-orders, just as they have ended other programs for us. It's why we can't have nice things.

Hi,

Don't waste your time trying to contact Amazon or Kindle Publishing. I had the same experience. I am a first time author and kindle Printing omitted the Table of Contents and the Title page of my paperback book. Everything looked fine when I viewed The pre publication previewer. Book published on 10/25; problem not corrected until 12/23. KDP and the Printing acknlowelded the error. I asked for them to send a corrected version of my book with a note to all customers who had purchased the paperback that it was KDP's fault.

KDP said they can't process my request; told me I had to go through Retail. I have been on the phone for almost three hours with Retail. None of the Customer Rep's have any idea what I'm asking. Finally one person did, but told me that they can't send out a corrected copy.

This error makes me look very bad. This is my first book published and I chose to publish it through Kindle. My entire experience has been less than satisfactory.

No, it was you who omitted it, first by choosing the bug-plagued KDP Print Beta instead of CrateSpace or IngramSpark, secondly by not uploading a proofed and perfect PDF.

Look before you leap; research before you publish; don't fall for Amazon's pooh traps, which are meant to benefit Amazon, not you.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

The error was yours in uploading a defective file. GIGO. Always order a physical proof copy before publishing.
