Amazon.com Kindle Book Sales Tracking is Still Broken or Glitchy Since Dec

I am greatly concerned because I believe the way they track Kindle book sales in the U.S. is broken. I have not sold a ebook of one title since December 27th 2017, but have sold 5 paperbacks since that time of the same title. My kindle book sales of this title always out sell the paperbacks of this title, but there has been zero ebook sales since December 27th in the U.S. market or a period of 11 days. I contacted Amazon to investigate the technical aspects of sales recording and do a full investigation for lost sales. They claim all sales are accounted for and no ebook sales were shown for that period. There was a big glitch in December and I believe it still continues. I am very skeptical and do not believe they have fixed the issue. It is interesting that during this period I sold two ebooks one in Australia and the other in India during this 11 day period. So, I believe international sales tracking is fine, but I believe Amazon.com sales tracking is broken to some degree. I always sell most of my books in the U.S. So, it is very strange, plus KENP or pages read are completely dead for the same period. Is anyone else concerned or having the same experience?

Hi Shawn. I too am concerned. I've only sold one ebook in nearly two weeks whereas before the issues with sale reporting, I was selling on average one ebook and one paperback per day. It's very disheartening. I know that my book sales could have fallen but I doubt that they are actually NOTHING. I feel powerless to do anything other than continue with promotion and keep writing more books :-(. I'm based in the UK and have been selling here and in the US.

I'm having the same problem, for long stretches I see no sales but my rank goes up and fluctuates. I wish they were more transparent on these things. I feel like we have to trust them on faith that the numbers are right.

I am seeing a similar thing here. Sales were happily ticking along in December, not enough to retire on but enough to raise a hopeful smile, but they are very, very slow now despite advertising. Pages read are also in single figures mainly since that date. Page flip? Going to read it later? Huge wholesale advertising from more well known people? It could be any of these things or it could be a server issue. I honestly don't know but it is disheartening to see it day after day after a successful previous month.

Hi - sales were good right up to Dec 17th and then NOTHING since. Page reads went to 0 on Jan 2nd.
It's not helping my current stress levels (possible redundancy for the second time in two years).
Bang goes Plan B.

I'm seeing the same thing here. My last ebook sale was on the 29th of December and the last page read was on the 27th.

It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!

My condolences to the writer who is facing a redundancy situation which I assume is potential loss of the day job.

Many of us were hoping Kindle sales would be a source of income until the economy recovers enough that there are jobs for everyone that wants one.

For many, Kindle royalties are grocery money, rent payment, heating bill right now.

Anyone looking for that would do better to be looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Becoming a self-sustaining author is not something where you just wake up and say, "I think I'll become a writer" and BAM, you start making a living as a writer. It can take years and almost 100% of the time it will take a good catalog of titles. 1-5 books isn't going to cut it. If a person thinks this is going to be easy, they should just go stand at an intersection with a cardboard sign. They'll make a lot more money, a lot faster.

I have been writing for over twenty years now, with numerous short stories sold to paying markets long before I first published with KDP in 2011. I still sell to paying markets and have more than 5 books out there.

For me, this was never a get-rich scheme.

I recommend you contact Amazon. I requested from them an investigation into the technical reporting of my sales. I'm convinced that a massive glitch hit in December and there are many still suffering from it. I am encouraged that since my inquiry it seems my ebook sales have returned to normal. I believe they fixed something, but have no idea what sales are missing. They claim everything was normal on the reporting end, but my sales started suddenly returning to normal. Some have commented that they are becoming increasingly less transparent with their delays in reporting and glitches. Write them and demand an investigation and I'm sure things will return to normal, but you might not recover any lost sales. Hopefully they are beginning to take these issues seriously and fixing them. Many are concerned that the KENP reporting is a mess. It seems to work sometimes and is broken at other times. I have only been with Amazon for 1 year publishing books and am not impressed with all the delays in sales and glitches throughout the year. Can't a massive corporation like Amazon get its house in order? I love KDP and publishing on Amazon, but sometimes they break my heart. I want to fall in love with them again. Hopefully 2018 will see less delays and glitches.

I KNOW I made a sale yesterday because I bought my own book as a gift for someone. And yet, my reports show no sales. Grrrr!!!!!!

I am afraid if you purchased one of your own ebooks as a gift for someone you essentially just handed them a gift card to purchase whatever they'd like with the original amount. While they very well could buy your book, it won't show up as a sale until they download it. Or they could use it for another ebook, you won't know.

Not only that, but there is a deadline if the book is purchased. After 48 hrs, the author still receives the royalty, but the purchase has no affect on ranking.

I wondered what happened. Now I wonder if Amazon is addressing this.
