Fastest Growing Genres?

Here's a question that just popped into my head last night:

We've all seen the data on the current best-selling genres (Romance, Mystery, etc.) For me, those genres represent the "Blue Chip Stocks" of the book world. In other words, the genres that just keep pumping out great books, year after year.

Does anyone know if there is a way to track (or any data currently available) things like the fastest growing genres, as those, at least to me, represent a small cap growth stock. An example would be like the Vampire books that came out several years ago.

All I have seen are reports that show what happened after the fact, but I was wondering if there is any way to track certain genres (or see how they are growing) in real time?

Thanks!

It's possible to do this yourself by looking at each category's share of total volume on the Amazon site you're interested in. It's not time consuming to calculate.

Personally, though, I would look at ways to disrupt the existing mature/established high volume categories, with a new entrant that offers real distinctiveness. Consumers love disruption and will reward people who genuinely offer it.

I like how you think. It would be fun to target a specific genre you truly believe is on an upswing. If you are right and the genre really takes off your book can ride the wave.

Thank you! I didn't know that was possible to see.

Can you share how exactly I see the share vs. total volume? I've never done that before.

Thanks. I was thinking that this might be a useful metric to see for someone just getting into writing. For example, if they are crafting a story with some different elements and characters, it might be beneficial to see what genre is taking off and possibly tailor the story to fit that genre.

The other benefit is that it might give some writers a better chance of success in going with a smaller genre that is on an upswing vs. going into a much larger genre.

This strategy might give them the chance of becoming a big fish in a small pond instead of just being a small fish in an ocean.

That is the exact strategy that i go by. I've quoted that fish statement for 4 years now and it still works!

To the OP, simply type in Various keywords and sub keywords ever so often then look for the ones with the most books.

I have several pens and don't cross their genres, however, if you type in keys you like, finally you might be able to find a niche off yours that is close enough to use w the same pen.

Can @blaze99 or anybody explain to me how this is done?

In order to find out what percentage a certain genre has, I would need to know the total amount of books (or just Kindle books) Amazon has, but I don't know where you get that number.

What I've tried so far is just clicking on "Kindle books", and I get: 1-12 of over 6,000,000 results for Books : Kindle Edition

Then, if I click on say, Romance, and I get: 1-12 of over 800,000 results for Books : Kindle Edition : Romance, which would be ~ 13% (800,000 /6,000,000 = 0.1333)

Is this what you guys are talking about doing, or am I doing this wrong?

Yep, that's the rough & ready way to do it. The real numbers may be higher, because a book doesn't get a ranking until it's sold at least one copy, but you probably don't need to know the genre of books that sell zilch their whole lives.
