You can get a free one which with KDP Print will mean your book is "independently published". Or buy you own. A block of ten might make economic sense. With your own ISBN your book can appear as "Published by Magic Mushroom Books" or whatever name you choose.

Apologies to any company called Magic Mushroom Books. :)

You also can get a free ISBN if you publish your print book through CreateSpace. CS is to be preferred to KDP-print in the US.

With either one, at a certain point you get asked, "Do you have your own ISBN or do you want our free one?"

If you want to control your book, you should buy the ISBN (or take the "free" one if your country offers them, as Canada for example does) from the organization that provides them in your country. In the US, that's Bowker. Individually they've very expensive, but you can get ten for $250 last time I checked.

It's probably overkill to apply an ISBN to an ebook.

Be aware that there are no "free" ISBNs. Somebody pays for them -- the taxpayers in the case of Canada, or Amazon in the case of CreateSpace or KDP Print. In return for the "free" ISBN from Amazon, Amazon continues to own it and is the publisher of record. You can imagine how the corner bookstore (if it still survives) would react to that.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

That's just it. I am not getting an offer for an ISBN all I'm getting is a block to input an ISBN. But not getting an offer of free isbn.

Well, then you must be working on making your cover.
When you uploaded your manuscript you should have been asked if you had your own ISBN or not. If not, then they would have assigned you one that will show on the cover when you proof it. It sounds like you answered the question wrong.

Many of us do our paperbacks (ISBN) at CreateSpace and there they show you the number up front.

You're generally not going to get an ISBN for an ebook. I'm guessing if you really want to put an ISBN on your ebook, you'll need to buy your own and add it on the bottom of the second page of the publishing platform. Amazon apparently does NOT supply free ISBNs for ebooks.

Robert, your problem is that you are playing in the junior varsity. KDP Print Beta is a year and a half old now, and it is only now getting its socks on. It won't be wearing big-boy boots for a long while yet, I'm afraid.

CreateSpace was a functioning business when Amazon bought it in 2009, and it's had a lot of experience since then. Bail out now and go to where things make sense.
