So I needed to update one of my books, and I had the brilliant idea to port a copy of the book into my kindle and do my proofreading on the go, anywhere, converting unproductive time into productive time. So I did that, found an embarrassingly large number of errors after many hours of proofreading. When I had the whole book read, I went to my desktop and pulled up my good old HTML editing program and prepared to edit. Opened up my Kindle to read my notes and found them ... missing. All of them. Hours of hard, close proofreading, gone.
What the hell?
I did some research, discovered that a lot of readers had reported similar problems. Kindle notes just have a way of spontaneously vanishing now and them. Apparently, if you have your Kindle book stored on the Kindle cloud, you can recover the notes, but if you ported the book in from your computer like I did ... nothing, that I know of.
So my purpose in posting here is twofold: one, to find out if I am wrong, is there perhaps a way to recover lost Kindle notes, and two, to report this issue to other authors so they will not make the same mistake I did, which is use Kindle notes for ... anything.
Frankly, this notes problem has caused me to seriously reassess my feelings about the kindle in a downward direction.
I'm really sorry to hear that Pat, you must be cursing and you certainly have my sympathies.
I often email myself a copy of my book as I'm working on it, just as a back up. However I always work on a laptop and don't actually have a kindle yet (blushes). I guess there is no way to back up on a kindle?

You didn't say if the notes and marks are still showing on your kindle.
Also was this a purchased Kindle book or a 'homemade' version (Using Calibre or something.)
Fear not You can recover all of the notes and marks! (If they still show in the Kindle!)
I move stuff arround all the time.
I use the 'personal document service' and the books will 'share notes and marks' with the Whisper sync.... EXCEPT THE KINDLE FOR PC/MACs!
Thanks I found that thread when I searched for other people on KDP with the same problem I have. I don't see how it applies to me, other than doing so might somehow get my unpublished book stored o the Kindle cloud so that I won't lose my notes in the future or something?
What I really want to know is, is there any way to recover those notes on a book that was ported into the Kindle Fire, but not "saved" to any other device. I can easily avoid the problem now that I know it exists by simply working directly from my desktop's HTML editor (Kompozer, I highly recommend it). I will not be able to proof while on the go, but at least my work won't vanish.
If the notes and marks are sill showing on the kindle fire, you should be able to pull them out ....
If you have Kindle for computer, But haven't loaded the book onto the program, You should be able to make it work.
On the fire, save 1 more note or mark, and then go to the home page.
I can't remember if the fire has to be off or on when you connect it to the computer, but you should shut it down and either connect it or re start it and connect it.
The idea here is to get the notes and marks file to close out and become current.
If the book is a do-it-yourself and not an official kindle book it will be under title. amazon books are kept by ASIN Number.
In your computer , open the fire and go to documents wherever you see the books, and then sort them by dates, there should be a file with your mook name and I believe a MBP Extention as well as the Your book.mobi file.
you need to copy/paste BOTH files to your MY Kindle Books folder in your computer, and then Double click on the Mobi book.
If the book is already in your computer without notes ande marks you have to hunt it (The mbp fileAnd delete it (sometimes these files are hidden.) the just copy/paste the MBP file from the fire and start the book up by double clicking the mobi book file in the My Kindle Books folder.
This should move the notes and marks over....
By the Way,... I am saying MBP file it may have a different designation (Extention)
You can tell right away which file you are looking for, because when you sort by date(newest first,) the desired file will be on top. that is why you just did that extra note or mark, the file was just updated and is the newest!
Gotta run, but come back and let me know what is happening...
this happens to me all the time on the kindle android app on my tablet. every time i connect to the PC it's a gamble whether or not my sideloaded books/notes will still be there. most recently, it happened in exactly the circumstances you describe: two weeks of proofreading notes vanished in an instant as soon as i unplugged the cable. for some reason the files are simply deleted. bizarre.
as long as you're quick, it should be possible to recover the MBP file using a standard file recovery program. then, in future, make sure you make a regular copy of the MBP files for any sideloaded books (dropbox is very useful for this).
I am trying to understand what type of file you put into the 'Fire?
I pulled out the old brick and downloaded the MOBI version that is on the bookshelf and ported it into the Fire(non HD) I put the mobi book into the documents section, and then when I ejected the Fire from the computer, I opened the book and made a bunch of notes and marks and highlights.
Then I shut down the thing and re started it and made 1 more bookmark. Then I shut it down again.
I re connected to the computer and hunted up the document and did the Most recent trick by sorting by date.
Thhere were the 2 files -- the mobi book and the MBP file of the same name.
I copied both and pasted them into the My Kindle Content file and after i ejected the 'Fire, I double clicked the MOBI book and all of the marks were there???
I am trying to figure out what happened to your MBP file,
I am wondering what kind of file you were working with, because I bet those notes and marks are floating around somewhere...
Sometimes I think some of these threads on the forum are Snake-Bit!
You are saying that your notes and marks are not showing in your Kindle Fire (Old Style?)
This is really weird!
Exactly, what type of file did you side load to the Fire?
I have done some experiments ...
I dug out the ole Brick and side loaded a file and then marked it and noted it and highlighted it and the notes and marks - it was an MBP File, by the way, were transportable to my Kindle for PC (KFPC) program.
This was a MOBI File that I gleaned from my KDP Bookshelf Files, so I do not understand why yours should disappear.
Specifically, what was your process to create the file and move it to the Kindle Fire?
