Go to the Amazon store, find your book, and BUY IT.

1) You get a boost in ranking.

2) You get 70 percent back in royalty.

3) You get to see what the book actually looks like on a Kindle.

I buy every one of my books as they are published, both on Amazon and on Barnes & Noble.

You could buy it (which will at least give your book a ranking, and you'd get your royalties).

Alternately, at step 6 (I think) on the edit page, you can download the mobi file you've created to preview it fully.

I always buy my book as soon as I can!

That guarantees at least one sale!

;)

Actually by the time I upload and publish my book, i already have about 15 copies of it!

I use Calibre and generate Kindle ready vbooks and then send a lot of them to them to the @ kindle.Com conversion address to Really test them.

Great points NJ, thanks.
I'm going to go and buy each of mine to do just those things.
First I'll have to buy a kindle though, whoops have been meaning to do that shameful really ;-)

You don't need a Kindle, all you need is the app for PC or Mac (which ever you have) for Amazon to send the books to.

Of course, having a Kindle is nice. I love mine! :)

You don't have to buy a kindle to purchase a Kindle book.

You can get A Kindle for... App and go to town.

Does anyone Know if there is a Manage my Kindle page for non kindle owners??

FREE KINDLE READING APPS!

This is an older topic, but still very valid.

I think the BIGGER point here is: Authors should be able to download, for example, a PDF or Word version of our book, to re-edit and re-uploaded.

Sure, it's fine to "buy your own book;" but, let's say we've lost the original - we should not have to "buy a copy" just to download and re-edit, then re-upload it.

This is a *BADLY NEEDED FEATURE FOR A ***VERY*** long time now! And, no, a ".mobi" download is NOT good enough! Yes, that can be converted to .DOC or .ODF or whatever, but that's not the point.

It cannot be that difficult for Amazon to, for example, retain the "pre-converted" version of our book file, so that we can download it, for easy re-editing.

Come on now, Amazon is THE "cloud company;" and this ability to download our book in various formats, WITHOUT having to "buy our own book," would be a wonderful cloud feature!

I do have copies stored on "other cloud vendors," whose names I won't mention, but still,
AMAZON: PLEASE PROVIDE AN EASY CLOUD STORAGE FEATURE FOR OUR PRE-CONVERTED BOOKS, available as an "option" directly in the Dashboard and in the overall "book upload/conversion" process!

That feature also would potentially make more authors more likely to publish more often, since their books can easily be edited/corrected and re-uploaded, without having to dig around for the original document.

Depending on what you uploaded, the original is indeed contained in the so-called mobi file available to you at Step 7 in the publishing process. It can be broken open with a free software called Mobi Unpack or Kindle Unpack.(Possibly no longer true with the introduction of Kindle Format 10, aka KFX.)

Really, it's not up to Amazon to protect you against a computer failure or other loss of data. That's what Dropbox is for.

Good luck! -- NJ

I just want to say that the only time I bought my own book, it showed as "returned" shortly afterward, and I was never refunded. So I certainly never got the royalty (35%, on that one). I suspect this was a glitch, however, and not standard procedure.

(The book is still on my Kindle and I can find no record of a refund in my bank account.)

You people are incredibly stupid. A lightening strike nailed my hard drive, and I need my text back. If Amazon won't give me my own property back, then that is something I need to consider seriously.

There are other ways to self-publish, and Bezos doesn't need my money.

Log onto your account and download the file at Step 7. As NJ noted, you can "unpack" this to find your original Word file.

Amazon is not a substitute for a thumb drive or saving to The Cloud or to Dropbox. No other e-publisher (Kobo, iTunes, Nook) will give you back your Word document either. I am sorry however about your computer.

Do you also expect Amazon to send you a new hard drive to replace the one that fried?

I understand it sucks to lose your work, but at the end of the day, you are responsible for making your own back-ups.

The e-books in Amazon's store are not "your books", the same way that you can't just walk in a physical bookstore and grab your books for free just because you wrote them. The content is yours, the books are not. And if you lost the content, at least be glad you can recover it without having to type everything up all over again.

Well, none of us opened a thread that was started almost four years ago to complain about something that was answered in the thread. Whatever, the directions for getting a mobi version is in the replies -- and in every other thread about this topic, which usually runs to about three or four a week. Maintaining your files is your job. This is a business. Treat it like one.

And it should be noted that Jeff Bezos doesn't need any one of us, as there are about a thousand new authors every month (or some huge number, I've seen it around). Go sell your books elsewhere. No other site is going to have your file ready to hand you back for whatever reason.
