I've published my own book and my husband and daughter want to read it on our kindle. Do I have to buy my own book? I haven't found a way to make it show up on my list of kindle books, even though the accounts are the same.

Mary,
no you can download free copies from the Amazon utility where you uploaded the book. Have a look at the page and you will find (I think it's item 6) a facility to review your book either on line using their emulator, or downloading the file. You download then use your USB connector to load it into your Kindle. In fact you should do this with every book you publish then run through it on the Kindle while having the source file (Word) on the PC screen so you can make final changes.

Cheers

I think you can transfer the evalutaion copy you download during the publishing process to your Kindle (the .mobi file). Just connect your Kindle to your computer and transfer the file to the "Documents" folder on the Kindle.

Hope that helps.

Why would you NOT buy the book?

1) You get a boost in sales ranking

2) You have the actual book on an actual Kindle to assure yourself you didn't make a terrible mistake somewhere or it didn't somehow get corrupted on the Amz server.

3) You get 70 percent of the purchase price back in royalty.

I buy every book the moment it goes on sale, both for my Kindle and for my Nook.

So, it's okay to be the first one to buy your own book?

Yes, absolutely. I'm always the first one to buy mine and my wife is the first to borrow it.

Of course it is. It also gives it a boost in the rankings, which you won't get with a download of the preview copy. You can also email your manuscript to your kindle, but buying it is best.

This thread was started two and half years ago, so it is always better to start your own.

Mary, always buy a copy of each book the moment it is available on the Amazon store. You get some or most of your money back in royalties, you get an immediate boost to about 250,000 in your book's ranking (thereby vaulting it past 3,750,000 other e-books), and best of all you get to see what the purchaser will actually see. No preview can tell you that, because there are changes made in the Publishing Workflow.

Good luck! -- NJ

Why would you not buy your own book? (my italics button is not working)

I totally agree. With all the points and the one thing you cannot do is write yourself a review.

I buy copies of the kindle version and give them as gifts to help boost my ratings and so I can get some attention going on the book. Its working for me. You know there is a give as a gift button on your sale page.

Hi Mary -

Hope your book is doing well.

Every answer that I would give has been posted on this thread.

I agree buy your own book for the reasons stated (you get 70% back if your book is 2.99 or higher, you get to view you book as others will see it).

Best,

I always buy my own books! If you won't buy your own book, then why should anyone else buy it? If you want your friends or family to be able to read it for free, then enroll in Kindle Select, and then put it up for a free promotion. I did this with a non-erotic story of mine, which is not under this pen name. It was nice for my family and friends to be able to read my book without feeling like I was scamming them for their cash.

Also, as mentioned, it boosts your books sales. If you really want to boost sales, read your book under kindle select first, so you get rankings for pages read, and then buy it. It counts as two sales and your rankings will go up more.

I sound like a schemer ;)

Not on the UK site there isn't.

June 2013 Mary Peterson asked a question - November 2015, 18 months later, I think she might have sorted it out by now.
