James,
I found a copy editor on upwork.com she charged $150 for 60,000 words. There were more expensive and less expensive there, but I liked her resume. This is a great place to find extra piece work, or someone to help with the pieces your having trouble with.

Thank you. Yes, I am aware of Upwork but just a word of warning...... check Google for "upwork.com scams" ......... there are some problems. Apparently this is a very genuine help site but it has been attracting some scam merchants with personal supplied data such as credit card numbers being mis-used. The site moderators are trying to stop this....... without too much success I gather. Must be most annoying for the good folk who put this site together!

Hope this helps...........

James

People actually give up their credit card numbers to gig merchants? That's awful (shame on them, not on the thieves).

In twelve pages of replies, I trust someone has mentioned Kboards Writers Cafe. I have seen offers over there from editors who want to get started at $15 or $25 a book. What have you have to lose? (Well, your credit card information, of course -- use PayPal!)

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ

Good grief. I've seen work where I'd want to charge $15 to $25 per page.

Edit: Make that $150 to $250 per page. >:(

$25 for the book? That's what, 3 hours at minimum wage. They wouldn't be able to read the book in that time, let alone edit something. All they'll do is run the thing through Word's review, make those changes, and send it back. But for many books I've seen, that would be an improvement.

Yep, I've seen those too where even just fixing the dialog tags and punctuation would be a 100% improvement.

Seriously. There must have been 100, maybe even 200 books that I've passed by, simply because they were impossible to read. I don't expect every little detail to be perfect, but please make it readable.

Exactly. Even better is to get the prose to the point where it is "readable without pain." It took me three years and 86 rejections to get to that point. And that was a barely-passable point. I like to think I've improved significantly beyond that.

I don't know what it was like before, but your first person writing is excellent, as enjoyable as any I've ever read.
