How large is an average size draft? I don't understand about this charging by the MB comment? Most books I edit are usually between 200-400 Kb for the average sized ones.

Hi I'm Ember and I recently sent my second book to James and he did a great job! His prices were low, much lower than anything I have seen anywhere else. He had a super fast turn around time. He had my book back to me with edits within 48 hours and he penned everything he did in red so I would know what he did and I could try to learn from my mistakes. I have a book out on Amazon that I am going to send him next because I never got a professional edit done on that one. I will send all the books I write to James in the future as long as he continues to do this. Thanks James!

Thank you for your nice comments Ember. I thoroughly enjoyed editing your book as it was a great read and I think it will sell well providing you do a reasonable promotion. Definitely look forward to editing your next one and any others you do.
Cheers and good luck with all your books.

Having just edited three children's books and a non fiction for a friend, all I can say is you need a medal at the very least and should be charging a fortune for the mere trauma of the exercise! I also did a couple of freebies for posters on here and a facebook group. One was such a tedious story, it drove me nuts but the other, having asked me to do it on the basis of reading my own books which I edit myself, declared that I had done it wrong. She had all her full stops and commas outside the closing quotation marks and wouldn't have it that it was wrong.

Anyway, just wanted to post this so that all your clients appreciate the frustration involved in the job.

You clearly have more stamina than I do. After reading and commenting on student essays for thirty-six years as an English teacher, I can still edit my own material, but I think I would have a hard time sitting through someone else's.

Sadly, I don't think clients really do appreciate how difficult it can be to edit someone else's material. That may be one of those things that you have to do yourself to truly understand. Every time I had a student ask why yesterday's essays weren't done yet I was reminded of that same truth.

I've seen it cost $3 or $4 per page for a novel.
Hope it helps you.

You're dead right there Florrie!
When I first started editing 35 years ago on all the books my publishing company was releasing I became extremely frustrated and actually hated this part of my job. But over time I settled down and these days I treat it as a time-filler as I am retired. Funny thing though..... now when I read something errors and mistakes just pop out of the page at me..... I don't even have to search for them. This makes editing extremely easy and some of the newbie Amazon author books I've worked on recently are either a fascinating read or highly educational. I tend to reject "junk" books after viewing the first two chapters that I request authors to send me. Also I'm giving newbie authors a 50% discount at the moment for their first couple of books mainly to help them along financially but this means I'm working ultra cheaply which my wife is not happy about, so I'll dump this discount soon.
In the meantime..... life rolls on!

I checked my Novella with Office Libre, Word, Gramarly and text to speech. While I knew I had some punctuation problems, I thought I was in good shape. I contacted James, sent him the first two chapters and, much to my surprise, got the red sea back.
I sent James my Novella and am very satisfied with the work he did for me. Not only did he correct punctuation and spelling problems (on almost every page) but also offered suggestions on alternative words or alternative phrases. I used 99% of his suggestions.
Now, don't want to mislead people in my recommendation.
James is doing a one pass edit for what I consider a bargain.
Publishing houses typically do multiple pass edits with different types of editors. That is not what James is offering.
I will say I am writing a full length novel and will use James services when done.

Thanks for those nice comments Carlos, but I am actually doing a two-pass edit.
I check each chapter visually very slowly and when complete go back to the beginning of the chapter and use a Beta testing version of a new New Zealand experimental editing program (not yet in production) which often highlights the occasional thing I have missed. So it's actually a two-step process for the price of one.
Slows me down a bit but gives the author a better product and makes the book more readable and less likely to attract negative reviews. And that is the bottom line!!

Cheers

Heck, just worked out that with my 50% editing discount for Amazon newbies I am only getting around $1 per A4 page. It's no wonder I can't afford to buy new shoes for myself and the kids!!

That's correct. A 100,000 word book usually costs $500 - $600 dollars. I give Amazon newbie authors a 50% discount for their first couple of books...... just to get them started.
I do a double edit too these days. I read a chapter slowly and make all the corrections I notice. Then I go back over that chapter with an editing program to pick up anything I have missed, such as double words, incorrect commas, etc. Some of the book chapters I edit have 30-50 corrections required (for each chapter) so it's easy to miss something.
