I had this one edited for $150 but I have to say I'm not that overboard with the results:

Next time I'll spend a little more...say $250??

David, a typical editing cost for a standard sized book is usually US$450-$500. I offer Amazon newbie authors a 50% discount off this standard price for their first couple of books. If someone is offering you a vastly reduced price you need to be somewhat suspicious.
Hope this helps.

Personally, I charge between 3/4¢ and 2¢ a word, based on the word count (in Word) of the original file. The highest one is for people who aren't native English speakers, but would like to sound as if they are. The cheapest is just basic spelling, punctuation, and grammar. For a penny a word I'll throw in some continuity checks and try to keep you from blatant factual errors (.38 Special Lugers, transistor radios at Anzio, that sort of thing). For half the royalty I'll narrate the thing, but you have to do that through ACX. The editing can go on a credit card.

Not sure if I've got my maths right here......... for a 100,000 word book at 1c per word does this come out to $1000?
Have I got the right number of zero's?

That's gotta be right. A typical novel will run $800 to $1200 for a full edit. And, believe it or not, the editor is NOT getting rich at those prices. For most books needing editing, it is a slog.* And, you as editor can't take for granted that the submittor of the piece has double-checked anything.

... * though I have been lucky lately to have been able to edit some interesting work.

It does seem to be more common to price by the page, but then you have to convince the writers to use a standard page format. Usually that would be the old standard, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, using a monospace font. Except no one does that these days, so a page can be anything from 225 words to 600 words. On the other hand, the "file" tab on Word includes a word count, and that's easy for both writer and editor to look up. Priced by the word, it works out about the same, but you don't have to reformat the thing to determine price.

Most of what I've edited recently hasn't been book length. People apparently have shorter attention spans than they used to.

I've noticed over the years that some fact checking is more important than other. Gun people are particularly picky. You'll get fewer complaints if you have Jefferson write the Declaration of Independence in 1847 than you will if you give a private eye a Smith & Wesson Chief's Special in 1940 (they didn't make them until 1950, as numerous people will be happy to remind you).

You're dead right Joseph. It can be time-consuming and non-profitable. Especially when there are 30-40 corrections required for each and every chapter!!!

You must work on some mighty short chapters. :)

Yep Joseph, one book a while back required almost 600 corrections plus some sentence structure mods. Takes up a lot of extra time and I probably still missed a few! Gonna stop my discount editing shortly!

Fact checking is a very lengthy involved process. I do simple editing and proof-reading and present the book in a manner that hopefully won't attract negative reviews based on poor editing. Seems to be working so far.......

Yep. US$500 is a standard price. That is my usual charge for a standard size book that's not too complicated.
Except for the past 18 months I've been offering Amazon newbie authors a 50% discount off this for their first couple of books..... to help them get started.
I've been following the Amazon concept since Jeff Bezos first started it and am happy to support authors who use this platform.

Some authors go to a lot of trouble to proof-read their book before submitting it to an editor while others present the original "raw" copy. I think this is because they have had a "gutsful" of writing their book and just want to get it out there. Having written 41 Amazon books myself I can understand their line of thinking and it is darn hard to edit ones own book!

It is hard to edit yourself. My famous errors are the the and leaving out words entirely.

As to paying to get raw drafts edited--I can't see that, unless the editor has a fixed fee. When I do an edit, I "clock" both by a per-page rate and a per-hour rate, and then charge the lesser amount. This gives my clients an incentive to have work as clean as possible before submitting to me. This seems to help the quality of submissions some.

Joseph, just curious...... what level of editing do you do?
I do basic editing and proof-reading (and correct missing words and basic sentence structure), etc. I simply arrange the book so that it doesn't attract negative reviews based on bad editing. However I don't get into Oxford-English perfection.
It seems to me that you go a stage further?
