What does it cost you professional authors to have your book edited? I'm thinking of a book around 90,000 words.

James, shop around, you will find those who will do it from $700 to $1,000.

Depends on what kind of editing you're looking for. You could probably get that proofread for as little as $300. Copy editing, line editing or other will run more.

a pro editor doing a double pass and working with you on a book paragraph by paragraph until it's perfect will be $700+. If you get a personal introduction / referral from someone, it might be a little cheaper

a lot of great editors (including Dave VanDyke on here) charge a flat fee per 1k words depending on the quality of the draft (usually $3 - $5 per 1k per go-through), and most if not all offer a free sample to make sure you work well together.

I find the latter option more flexible.

The industry standards are posted below, however i and others pay less do to various working relationships etc.

Standard for post edit "proof" is 3 -450 dollars depending on word count

The initial full edit with two to three complete pass through ranges from two dollar a page to 4 dollars a page if a line edit, at 250 words a page double-spaced in Times Roman font -12

A "collaborative" full edit inclusive of line edit, content, structure, prose, character development is 7 to 10 dollars a page spaced and structured as described above.

Some editors are word-count only usually three to 5 cents per word.

That is the standard spread industry wide, indies vary, the pros are above as described

Guys, thanks for the responses. Perhaps I should have explained that I used to be a professional editor. I owned a publishing company in Australia for 32 years
and edited around 300 manuscripts for publication. I have also edited all my 39 titles on Amazon. I only market on Amazon these days.
Recently I turned 75 and decided to fully retire but my wife is already niggling that I'm hanging around doing nothing! (She used to complain that I worked too hard!)
I was wondering about the possibility of doing some editing for newbie authors as there is some brilliant work out there..... most of it unedited.
I guess I would need to keep the cost right down but still make enough out of it to justify the exercise. It would fill in some of my spare time anyway!
Any comments?
James

Thanks for that.
I'm sorta open to ideas here.
Maybe take a peep at a quick webpage I did last night and let me know what you think.

The website doesn't look too bad; I have certainly seen far worse! As a sales tool, I am not sure if all that biographical material is necessary up front. Perhaps a statement right off the bat, of the services you offer, at what cost, and then follow with the biography? But then, I am no sales guru.

I do a fair bit of proofreading for friends, and suggest rewording this line:
'Some low cost (and dubious services) charge as little as $20 per hour and others charge by the word.'

Interesting comment. I've modified that sentence somewhat and cleaned up the rest.
Thanks.

What is the cost of not learning to self-edit? of handing off your work to someone who has little clue about what you're trying to say, or the story you want to tell? Did you buy the lie that editors have "secret powers" that an ordinary writer cannot learn?

I just came across a facility on Twitter that offers editing for authors (as well as other professions) at a flat rate of $1 per page - if that's of any interest?

http://www.bzhercules.com/index.html

I presume that's A4 rather than book page, otherwise 380 pages ain't gonna be cheap!!

Interesting page but if you look into it they have a charge for editing, proof reading and triangulation. Looks like it might end up costing $2 - $2.50 per page for the whole job.
So if you have a book of 300 pages you could be up for $600 - $700. I can't work out whether they are referring to A4 pages or book pages.
