You're spot on Rupert. Here I am reading a fantastic story totally engrossed in the characters and suddenly a giant typo leaps out and distracts me. Very, very annoying.
So I forgive the author and carry on reading. Then another error leaps out. And I think to myself.... "Why doesn't this author get an editor?" He has a fantastic storyline which is totally stuffed up with typos. The chance of this otherwise excellent book selling by word-of-mouth diminishes dramatically with each error. And word-of-mouth (via newsgroups, social media, etc.) is vitally important. Look what happened to that top seller WOOL.......... shot to the top via word-of-mouth.
I am extremely supportive of the Amazon Kindle process but seriously wonder what it does to KDP's reputation when all these unedited junky books appear on their website.

Jes, let me know when you do this link. I will be happy to reciprocate by running your cover link on my editing page. I keep it reasonably up to data.

I charge indies $500 - $1000 for a novel, depending on what shape it's in. But then I'm honestly not trying to attract more indie clients, because that's still only a fraction of what a trad publisher pays me. I have a few indies I work with because I like them--but then that also means I need to keep open space in my schedule for their future books.

If you have special knowledge or experience with a certain field, you might also hit up publishers in that field and ask if they ever use freelance editors. If they do, they'll probably send you an editing test. From there they might send you projects as they come up, or some ask me what my availability is per month--how many hours do I have free in July, for example--and then they use me up to what I've said I can do.

I agree strongly with the sentiment being mentioned here. Editing is absolutely crucial for almost all writers, and is usually part of the publishing process. In self publishing like we have here on Amazon for Kindle eBooks, we often have the unenviable position of people needing help but certainly unable to afford full rates of some editing firms. Traditional publishing offers some editing as part of any book deal, and hybrid publishers like Outskirts Press or Ingram Gold might offer some editing services to self published authors but still at a hefty fee. One option that hasn't been mentioned is proofreading or copy editing. For example, if your writing simply needs polishing or correction for grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes with suggestions for improvements, you might benefit from our special service for authors called proofreading plus (basically a mix of proofreading and minor copy editing but with suggestions thrown in). The rates are much lower than what is being quoted here for editing in most cases (and our editing rates are reasonable also). Also, and this is a big plus, we've been known to be very empathetic with eBook authors and have been known to offer reduced rates in some cases. So check out http://www.booksgetdone.com . Thanks James! As it happens, I'm currently reading a short novel (An English Custom by James Henry) that caught my eye and I liked the 'Look Inside' enough to take a punt. It supports your point admirably. For a first effort it's actually very engaging and enjoyable (for me) but it's riddled with typos and grammar issues. I can look past those and still enjoy the story and the characters but, alas, there are too many saddos out there who would see such errors as the perfect excuse for a little trollin'.

The book shows great promise, IMHO, and the author is already working on his second. I prefer to try to help aspiring authors develop their talents rather than shoot them down in flames and offered to proof read for him etc prior to publishing - for the very reasons you describe (he has accepted my offer, btw). Not everyone can write perfect English but they can write a damned good tale...

........What will it take to edit my 50,000 word manuscript.......

OK.... as this is your first post on this forum (and I assume you're a newbie author) I'll give you a hand here....
Email the manuscript to me and I'll take a look at it. If it doesn't look too complicated I'll do this one for free just to get you started.
But if it looks really complicated I'll make a small charge. But I'll let you know first.
Go to the website below and email to the address shown.

Hope this idea works for you...

Look carefully, there are a lot of fly by night company offering editing services and they are crap. The best thing to do if you are serious about writing and publishing is join a writers society, community, or network with other writers. Often times, you can find someone who is willing to help you with story and you don't have to pay thousands for it, it also gives you a lot of insight about different writing techniques and honest opinions. I've published two books by myself and I have learn this lesson well. Don't be discouraged because it's a lot of work but you did the hardest part, you wrote a story and that is something that will always be with you.

No, editors don't have any 'secret powers.' What they do (or should have) a firm grasp on the rules of punctuation; and the rules of grammar. They also have something you cannot possibly have - objectivity.

I've heard one company charged about $10-$17 per 1,000 words and threw in a free ebook cover. I believe they were called Bubblecow.

I send my friend, an ex. sec. a crate of Florida oranges every Christmas and she gets a nice BD present each year too. There is no cash exchange. She is thinking about doing this editing thing after she retires, she will require cash at that point tho.

Every time I read an assertion here by indie authors that they will essentially demolish the trad publishers and their authors, I think about all the mountains of unedited trash that are uploaded posing as eBooks and have to laugh.

John, interesting thing here.... This thread is several years old and I assumed it had totally died away. But a couple of people have resurrected it. Don't actually do much editing these days and then generally only for newbie Amazon authors to help them get started by demolishing editing errors.
