There are so many things about this offer that would send me running away that it's ridiculous.

I tried it. Didn't get selected but they sent me a $25 Amazon gift certificate for being in the first group of submitters to Scout. BTW if you vote for a book (can vote for up to 3) and it gets selected you get it free. One of the books in my group that did get selected was "Aliens v. Pitbulls." Alas, I did not vote for it.

My impression was that to have a real shot you had to keep your book "Hot and Trending." In other words you had to generate people going to the site and voting for it. I'm not really sure how great that is for Amazon. People who can be social-media-encouraged to go to Scout and vote for a certain book are not necessarily people who will plunk down cash to buy an ebook.

Possibly not, but on the other hand, if a writer has been smart about building up his or her social media presence, at least some of the followers who will be encouraged to vote are readers. In fact, the ones who bother to vote are even more likely to be readers. In my experience, it's fairly easy to get people to like a page, follow a Twitter account, that sort of thing, than to play a more active role. The ones who do respond to an appeal to go vote for a book in the Scout program probably are genuine fans, not just random people.

Of course, authors also tend to follow each other to provide mutual support. If such authors go to Amazon to vote for their friend, that works to Amazon's advantage too, by advertising the program more widely among authors. Someone who might not otherwise have really thought about Scout is probably more likely to think about it after visiting the site.

Scout probably won't do much for a hitherto undiscovered great writer, but for Indie writers with a following, it gives them a better shot at being trad published by Amazon. The crowd picks the finalists, but Amazon makes the final decision on publication, so if someone is all social media hype and no substance, Amazon won't get stuck with them.

Glenn, you could be right about the program. We'll know soon enough once the books published in this way have been out for a while.

I have to say, though, that at least on paper there isn't much that could send me running. The advance isn't huge, but I've heard some writers comment it's probably what a newbie would get from a trad publisher. 50% royalty is less than KDP but a lot more than a newbie would get from a trad publisher. I'd bet that Amazon's promotion of the work would probably more than make up in volume the difference between 50% and 70% on each individual book.

Amazon could also get a writer into a lot of different markets that would be expensive to reach otherwise. Amazon would probably only do translations and/or audio books with a book highly successful in its initial release, but remember Amazon also buys rights for both. I understand a good translator is expensive, and a good audio book producer certainly is. If Amazon forked out a few thousand for translations and/or audio books, getting me into markets I otherwise would have to spend a lot of money myself getting into doesn't sound all that bad.

Authors already selling really well on their own probably won't be interested. But for someone whose work is still struggling to find an audience, the Scout program might be just what the doctor ordered. Perhaps someone who has been published that way will contribute to the forums eventually.

I'm SO over it with all things requiring "liking" and "voting" and "friends" and "stars" and whatever all that combines together to create yet another variation of crappola. This book "deal" is yet another one of those schemes whereas if the author/contestant has a lot of "friends" and "followers" who can be coerced into taking a few minutes to vote three times, then..bam...that defines the "winner". So, no matter how much a book actually sucks, if there are votes to favor it, it is boosted to the top and bada-bing-bada-boom...there you have it...The Next Bestseller!

Whoop-di-doo.

Actually, that's not quite how it works.
On the Kindle Scout page, under the question, "How do you decide what books receive a Kindle Press publishing contract?" is the answer, "Nominations give us an idea of which books readers think are great; the rest is up to the Kindle Scout team who then reviews books for potential publication." So they don't merely take the most popular books; that's taken into consideration, but not solely relied upon.
They also stress, "Make sure the entire book is ready to publish. This means (at the very least!) the manuscript has been professionally copyedited. We recommend following The Chicago Manual of Style."
